Today, thousands of people gathered in a memorial service for Irish reporter Veronica Guerin. The country's President and Prime Minister were among the many celebrities in attendance.
Watching parts of her city becoming controlled by criminal drug lords, Guerin had refused to look the other way, and constantly confronted them in the press. When her work started to bring too much pressure on their enterprises, the drug lords warned her to desist or else. Bullets were fired through her home windows and she barely survived an assassination attempt last year.
Despite this, she had refused to be intimidated and pressed on in her attacks. She was cowardly murdered by two men earlier this year while waiting at a stoplight in her car.
The architects of these murders were to be severely disappointed in the results of their actions, for instead of lessening the pressure on themselves, they have, instead, united the country against them like it has never been before.
