Reading through all these posts, you can tell that Criss Micheal Oliva has really touched the hearts of so many people. Many entries brought tears to my eyes and though I tried to pause to dry them, I couldn't pry away.
Criss' music has the same effect; he always put his all into his art, not only do the words echo in your mind when you listen, but the music does too. He had a way of tapping into that emotional pool that is in all of us and puting it right out there for us all to see. He must have been a beautiful person. Criss, though I never had the chance to say, "hello", I regret that I also never had the chance to say "Goodbye". We all miss you, and through your music and Savatage, your presence will always be with us. R.I.P.
To John and Dawn and all his friends and family; I know how hard it is for his fans to deal with his passing, I can't imagine what it must like for you. I DON'T WANT TO. You have my sincerest condolences.

"And can you hear me now - or are there just too many doors
Between then and now - for me to ever reach on through
and pull you back somehow - But that don't happen anymore
still in the dark - I'd swear I hear you calling"

And to God, who has taken Criss to a better place:
"If you find the time, please change the storyline
or give a call, explain it all, I'll even leave the dime"
(I guess he just couldn't wait;)

LIKE EVERY OTHER FAN, I WILL DEARLY MISS CRISS OLIVA.
LUCKILLY, I'VE HAD THE OPPERTUNITY TO SHAKE HANDS WITH HIM.
HE HAS AFFECTED MY LIFE IN THE BEST POSSIBLE WAY. I'LL
NEVER FORGET HIM OR HIS BROTHER. THE MUSIC THEY CREATED
WAS, IS, AND WILL ALWAYS BE UNTOUCHABLE. ONE OF MY DREAMS
WAS TO PLAY ON THE SAME STAGE AS CRISS ON THE SAME NIGHT.
ALTHOUGH PHYSICALLY THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN, HE'LL ALWAYS BE
WITH ME IN MY HEART WHERE EVER I PLAY.

I've been an strong Sava fan since the early days at the Ritz Theatre days down in Ybor city. Jon was a guitar teacher to one of my band members. He was the one who turned me on to the thunderous Sava sound. Since that day, I have been mezmerized by Chris' licks. We always bumped into all of them at the Volley Club Rocket Club or Mons Venus.
Well all I really got to say is Cris and Randy are probably having a ball right now.
Rest in peace.

I discovered Savatage about 10 yrs. ago and their music has filled the air around me with awesome soul-moving power. I had the privilege of seeing them live 3 times and all 3 times with Criss. If any person filled the position of "heart" of the band, it was Criss. I am still an avid fan and whenever I listen to my CD's with Criss playing, the guitar wails, it moves me to tears often and it strikes a chord in all of our souls. I read all the great comments on the Memorial Wall and I was astounded to see so many foreign countries represented. That just goes to show that his music transcended all barriers and borders. We all love you Criss and you remain forever in our hearts.

The music of Criss Oliva and Savatage have been major supports for me since I have been listening to them. Some pieces still bring a tear to my eye. It is such a tragedy that Criss is no longer with us physically. Such a shame that his talent is overlooked majorly.

Like myself, so many people in the world will never get to see the beauty in the truth behind his playing. Those who have, are VERY fortunate for God holds him now.

Hall of the Mountain King came into my life during a rough time, and
helped me pull through. I have followed Savatage since, and with
the loss of Criss "The Crunch", a piece of my soul died too.

Thank you Criss, wherever you are now. You live in my heart,
and can never die. We will meet again...

RIP - Your music will never die!

The very first time I heard Savatage was when MTV(Yes!! Really!) played
them on Headbanger's Ball. It was the video for "24 Hours Ago" off of Hall
of the Mountain King. Ever since then I've been hooked. I was in the basement
Northrop Auditorium at the University of Minnesota when I heard of the news of
Criss's death. I almost fell over. I was so stunned that one half of the gretest
sibling combo in metal history was dead. My heart went immediately out to John.
It seemed that I had just seen them in concert for "Streets," and John was telling
the audience of how much he admired his brother and how much he appreciated Chriss's
support through all the tough times John was going through.
Without Chriss in the band Savatage will never sound quite the same. Thank God, though,
that John stayed on - even in a supporting role. I know Chriss would want the Band to
live on with his spirit to present to the world the quality of music all metal should
strive for. Too bad "Doc" had to leave after 15 years, I'm sure he carries Chriss's
spirit with him on whatever future path he will travel.
As for me, I will forever remember Chriss and the wonderful art he created through
Savatage.
Rest In Peace Christopher Michael Oliva, and always remember...
...the lights
turn them off my friend
and the ghosts
we'll just let them in
'cause in the dark
it's easier to see...

I would first and foremost like to thank everyone that has posted to this page. ALl of you have done Criss & Savatage justice. I not only had the destinct pleasure of seeing Criss and 'Tage live, but I also worked for them as local crew on a show or two.
I saw them 5x and no time was a disappointment. Criss was unreal when he was live. Very quiet by nature, pleasent offstage and on, but always a wildman onstage :)

I have some pictures of myself and some band members on my site. Please visit it sometime.

The first time that I heard Savatage was the song Hall Of The Mountain King, and since then I've been a die-hard Savafan. I would've had the pleasure to see them for the first time for the Edge Of Thorns tour, when they would've opened for Vince Neil, but two weeks before the show, The local radio station mentioned that Criss had been killed in a car accident. I was devistated. I spent the next three months listening to nothing but Savatage. The thought of an amazing guitar player such as Criss not having an impact in music anymore was tragic. Being a drummer with many musical friends, I began pushing to form a Savatage cover band, and song songs have evolved from that. But most inportantly, I picked up guitar myself, just because of Criss. STRANGE WINGS is the only song I know but I'm working on HALL OF THE MOUNTAIN KING. I'm glad Savatage continued on after Criss' death, because I know he would have wanted it that way. Criss Oliva will always live on in my life as part of one of the greatest bands in metal history, and his infuence in my life as a musician will carry on forever and any song that I write in the future will have a taste of Savatage. Criss, Rest In Peace until we meet on the other side. Savatage FOREVER!!!!

If I had to pick one musician that influenced my own guitar playing the most it would be Criss Oliva hands down. I know we haven't seen the last of him, he will join us again. But for now, it's almost impossible to imagine music without him. While I have many guitar influences, his influence is the dominant one.

The first time I had contact with Savatage was the song Hall of the Mountain King. As well as 24 Hours Ago, both in the same year. My next acquisition was the albu Streets. Very different from what I was used to. Then I bought Gutter ballet. Then Edge of Thorns came out. This album to date is still the all time best album ever. Not just for Savatage, but for all rock music. Slowly the collection built. But, finally I had a complete dose of his sound.

I certainly hope that next year when I release my first effort, tentatively entitled, The Eleventh Hour, that my guitar playing reflects his influence on me. Call it my own little tribute. But even without him, I'm glad Savatage continued on, just as I'm sure Criss would've wanted them to. Handful of Rain was good, Dead Winter Dead (was Awesome!) as well as better, and I'm sure that Wake of Magellan will be able to compete with Edge of Thorns for the position of The Best. Even without Criss' playing, without his influence, even new Savatage material wouldn't be able to stand. His playing lives on. (Gee, didn't DWD have that Gutter Ballet feel? Reminded me a lot of Criss!) I have faith that the new album will do the same.

Till we meet again Criss, Au Revoir.

It is August 24th 1997 and I just found out about Chris's death as I enterd the Savatage Website. I have been listening to Savatage since Hall of the mountain king came out. I have always loved the talent that Chris held. I always wondered why he left the band. I had no knowledge of his tragic accident until today. When I learned of his death I burst into tears. This is the worst thing to happen since Randy Rhoades died. He has influenced me so much in my guitar playing. I feel so stupid for not knowing of his death. Me and my friends used to say things like, "what the fuck did he leave the band for?" Chris I am sorry for that and I hope you rest in peace. I also hope that if the man that killed him isn't dead that he comes down with a nasty case of cancer. Once again, rest in peace Chris. I'll always miss you. I'm just sorry I never got to meet you.

I first heard Savatage, and Criss' playing on the Hall of
The Mountain King album, and I was blown away by this guys
attack at the guitar. Being a guitar player myself I was
into Rhoads/Malmsteen at the time and in high school. Criss
played different from those guys and it really grew on me.

The emotion that pours out of his notes on the solo for
Legions (of the Night) is just stinging. and his liquid smooth
hammer on ability is always welcome to the ear.

I herad of his passing and it really brought me down. I
had all the old albums thruogh Gutter, and kinda faded away
from listening to other people's music, to write my own.
He is for sure an infuence.

I saw the Gutter Ballet tour in Columbus, OH. and very glad
I did. I was lucky to see him, and the whole band for that
matter perform one kick ass show.

Thanks, Criss and Savatage

It is hard to articulate feelings for a man who has touched my soul with his music, when there is nothing I can do to help him except remember him. He worked some incredible magic in the Edge of Thorns album, enough magic to turn one fan (me) away from three chord bands, and search for others that did what Criss does. Counterpoint adds so much to music, and Criss was a master of it. All I can hope is that we all remember him, so that he may still live in our hearts, minds, and CD players. I really wish I could've met you Criss.

Criss Oliva was a brilliant guitar player, the type that are
few and far between, that left an indelible mark on the
hearts of his fans. Words cannot adequately express the feelings when
someone of his caliber is lost in such a senseless manor. His
music will be with us for as long as his fans continue to listen.
The best form of respect we can show as fans of his, and Savatige,
is to continue to share his music with those who have yet to
be mesmerized by it. Keep faith in the fact that Criss is in
a place of beauty where surely his music must echo within its
halls, and remember that death is not the end, but merely a
doorway to the next stage of the journey.

And if I go away
What would still remain of me
The ghost within your eyes
The whisper in your sighs.....

WE ALL BELIEVE!!!

We love and miss you Criss!

I was living in Germany when I got the news on Criss` death. I had been to a concert with Chuck Schuldiner`s DEATH and ANACRUSIS, and
one the subway back home, I read the newspaper published by this rock venue called "Rockfabrik", and in the news section, it said
"Stop press! Latest news - Savatage`s Criss Oliva dead in car-crash!" I reacted with anger, blaming the staff of Rockfabrik to print such
bullshit-rumors without checking them first. The next day I phoned The Germany-office of Atlantic/Warner Music, and I asked them if they
knew something more specific, and they told me that it was true.
It was really strange, and I remember drinking a whole bottle of red wine, listening to the "Gutter Ballet" and "Streets"-albums the whole
night. My best-man in my wedding and my best friend is a 100 % dedicated Sava-fan, and he had met Criss a lot of times when they were touring in
Germany, Holland, Belgium and Scandinavia. For him this was a really shock, and still, writing august 1997, it`s sad for him to think of this,
and I must admit, I still haven`t really found out that the guy really IS dead.
OK, the band works fine with Chris Caffery back in the band (I don`t understand what Al Pitrelli is doing in the band, though), and Zachary, Johnny, Caffery and Jon
had made a new core of the band. "Will it ever be the same?" of course not, but the name SAVATAGE still stands for quality music, and the recordings of Criss
will always be there for our listening. One day, me and my best friend will travel to Clearwater/Tampa and visit Criss` grave.
RIP, Criss.

I remember seeing the name Savatage on the marquee at a club in anaheim ca. called the Bandstand. It was a club that I played frequently with my band, Presence. This was the beginnig of a long love affair with Criss' music. Later after going thru some substance problems myself I found so much hope in Johns lyrics on the streets album, thanx for sharing such personal details with your fans! I saw Criss live at the Coach House in san clemente on Aug. 22, 1993 witch we all knoww is about two months before his death. I will always remember that night, and its hard to read the tribute wall even now without a tear forming. I remember climbing on the stage halfway with my body and Criss kept coming over and jammin right in front of me, almost letting me actually plat with him, not too many rock stars are that cool. Thanx for giving us all a glimpse of how rock should sound! R.I.P. buddy!!

I heard of Criss death while on vacation when I picked up a free magazine and saw the article. Immediately, I felt as though someone stuck a big knife in my heart. I felt sick to my stomach and I grieved throughout my whole vacation. When alone I shed alot of tears. It's ironic how to this day I still feel so much more hurt, pain, and tears for someone I've never met, which is still more than for most people I've known and lost who were very close to me. Savatage's music means so much to me. It has got me through some rough time's. Whenever I'm alone and feeling down I always put on the 'Tage. I'm so glad you're back together, even though it won't be the same without Criss, no band can make me feel the way Criss and Jon's songwriting does. You're my #1 heroes. God Bless. I would just like to say that the reason i started to play the guitar was because of Criss. The first song i heard by Savatage was Edge of Thorns. I haven't been a fan for very long but after i heard that song i went out and bout every album untill EOT. When i read the Criss had passed away I almost fell into tears. The man who i idolized was gone and i cant' ever meet him. But his soul is with me as it is in everyones heart and soul. I just would like to say that he isn't gone if we keep him in our hearts.

I'll never forget the first Savatage song I ever heard, "Gutter Ballet".
It was played during "Monday Night Metal" on our local radio station,
KSHE-95, and it blew me away. At a time when most heavy metal music
was on the decline, here was a song that broke all the molds -- gentle,
melodic piano, gut-wrenching vocals, and a searing guitar sound that
rang out loud and clear, demanding your attention, and crying for
resolution. Unfortunately, it was that same radio station that delivered
the tragic news of Criss's death some 5 years later and the affect it had
on me was just as overwhelming. I simply stood there for a minute, stunned
and incredulous. I even called the radio station to make sure this wasn't
some cruel joke, or mis-information, but unfortunately, it was not. In those
5 years I had of course bought all the 'Tage albums, seen Criss and the boys
live, met them after the shows, received autographs, and waited patiently
for each new album. But it was the show I saw during the Streets tour that
convinced me that Criss was the greatest guitarist I'd ever heard. Playing
to a small audience at a less than perfect venue, he put out a performance
as though playing to an audience of millions. I was awestruck. There were
so many times during those 5 years that I relied on Savatage to pick me up
when I felt nervous, depressed or lonely. There was always a song, or a solo,
that seemed to articulate my feelings at the time, to vent the anger, or to
share in my sorrow. To Criss, you'll be sorely missed good friend. See ya'
on the other side.

Mentally yours,
Rod.

Hi Criss,

On the last Sava-tour in Europe, I suddenly realized how much people knew and adored you. For me, Streets will always be the ultimate album in history : finally an album where everything is perfect. The songs, the voice and the guitar, ... oh the guitar. It brough tears to my eyes the first I heard it, and it still does today. In my office, I got a big picture of me standing next to your final resting place - I'll never take it away.

I Havent known Criss Oliva for very long...I could only remember picking up a free JAM magazine with an article on the tragic Death of Savatage's guitarist. As time passed on I began to listen to Savatage material from friends and other sources..."This guitar playing was incredible and original" is what I thought since I am a guitar player myself. Later on I eventually aquired the entire Sava album collection....and my only regret was to find out about such a legendary guitarist/band until the horrible time of his Death. Very few people come around like Criss and the day that Jon parts from this world, It will be the end of an era. So sad it is but Sava and Criss live in the hearts of the people who believe in the cause....I look foward to meeting you on the other side Criss, Thanx for everything!

My first introduction to Savatage was in 1985, when I bought
a copy of "Power of the Night". Upon first listen to this
amazing album I knew that this band was destined for so much
more. The guitarist, Chris Oliva, mixed rich full chords
in his playing styler ather than over-using the basic barre
chords so many bands were doing. His agressive solo playing
has yet to be paralleled. His passing is still upsetting
to many of us who grew up with Chris and the rest of
Savatage playing on our stereos. The best thing we can do
to give Chris the respect he deserves is to keep his memory
in our hearts and to never forget what an impact he had on
our lives ...not only as a guitar player but as a person.
Rest in peace brother.

I have been rockin' for more than 30 years. I have seen one other generation of guitar players die and have grieved over them (although most of them killed themselves), but Criss was part of the greatest rock group I have ever heard. Their music has all the ingredients I require to REALLY get into the music - lyrics, guitars, hard and soft rock. Most of all, 'Tage has PASSION. They have more songs that give me chills and make me cry than any group I have ever heard. Jon is also a genius and I still love Savatage, because Zack has the most awesome voice I ever heard. Criss, we miss you, but thank the rest of the band for not only carrying on, but remaining the best rock group anywhere.

Criss is the only guitarist whose soul shined through his music so deeply. His legacy will always live on with those of us who felt that we knew him. Those heart-filled masterpeice moments (like the intro to "Follow Me" or the melody in "Summer's Rain") will always remind me of that terrible day that the radio DJ announced his very untimely death. The release of "H of R" helped many of us -- with "Chance", "Alone, You Breathe" and "Symmetry" all leaving lyrical notes of Criss' incredible life. May Criss "Sleep" in peace...

When something moves you inside the way SAVATAGE music does, can only be one of two things: love or passion.
Passionate is the way I describe music that can make me feel so much. Long Live SAVATAGE, for their music has been a great inspiration in my life, almost as much as the woman I love, and very closely related to God and his divine inspiration. May the music of Criss OIiva and Savatage be never forgotten by us, the sava-legionares!

I've been a huge Savatage fanatic since I was 15 (23 now), and I finally got a chance to meet and see the guys in Houston on August 27, 1993. We met the guys before the show, and it was a huge thrill to meet Criss since he's still my favorite guitarist. When I found out he'd been killed just over a month later, I was devastated. I hated to believe that I would never hear him again. His guitar sound and style was one of the most unique and recognizable in rock, and I am saddened that he never received the kind of recognition he deserved while he was still with us here. Criss, you will always be in the hearts and minds of Savatage fans. We love you, and I hope to hear you again one day, whether its in another life or somewhere above. Thank you, Criss.

It was one of the saddest days of my life, when I came home
and read on the MTV-Text about what had happened to Criss.
I still remember this moment as if it had happened only
yesterday. His music lives on forever, that's all we can
cling to. I appreciate very much what the rest of the Sava-
Clan is doing now, but don't imagine the songs being played
by Criss, it breaks your heart.

I Have been a die hard Savafan since the release of hall of the mountain king. The highlight of my life was meeting Jon Olivia when Savatage play at a bar called Bigdogs on the Handful of Rain tour. It was really emotional for me to sit at the bar with my hero and talk about the band. It was really difficult when we talked about Criss. He said Alex was good and Jon was playing rythem guitar thru the show, but it just wasnt the same as Criss. I had to agree. My only regret as I told Jon was that I never got to see Criss live. I am a guitarist as well and spend a lot of my free time learning Savasongs and trying to learn the music that Criss and Jon worked to write. The music world suffered a great loss when we lost Criss. We miss ya buddy.....

I started listening to Savatage in 1996 after reading a 16 page article in the "Rock Hard" magazine. I read about the geniuses Jon and Criss Oliva and had to listen to their music. After listening to the first tunes of "Hall of the Mountain King" I couldn't believe why I overlooked that band for such a long time. And after listening to "When The Crowds Are Gone" I knew this is my favorite band next to Blind Guardian. I listened to "Streets" so often and still have to cry when I listen to "Believe" - I still can't believe Criss had to die before I could've seen him at a concert. He became my absolutely favorite guitar player. I don't know anyone else who plays so emotionally and makes me feel the way I feel when I listen to him. The solos on the "Ghost In The Ruins" live release are overwhelming, his playing is so intense. I don't think there could be anyone else playing like him. I wish I may here him again in heaven and till that happens I'll start crying listening to "Believe" every time...

Criss Olivia was one of the most underated guitar geniuses of all time. It is a shame that we live in a world where Kurt Cobain gets more coverage than a true musical genuis like Criss. When ever I want inspiration, or am just plain in the mood for good music, I turn to Criss` version of Savatage. The feeling and choice of harmony that he displayed is only accomplished by a choice few in the guitar community. He is and will be sadly missed.

Criss Oliva is my favorite guitar hero.
I love his playing because it is so full of feeling, so emotional.
My favorite Criss' solos are on "Summer Rain" (from "Gutter Ballet") and "This is where you should be" (from the bonus tracks in "From the Gutter to the Stage").

I had heard Savatage in the early/mid 80's but didn't really pay attention to them until my keyboard player turned me on to STREETS, now one of my favorite albums of all time.

Criss in many ways re-inspired me to continue exploring my instrument. (I'm really condensing this!) I saw the band in Milwaukee, a few weeks before the accident. Musically, it was one of the best rock shows I've ever seen.

Today, every time I pick up my guitar (that's daily), I think of Criss and the incredible sounds, feelings, & pictures he would create with music. He inspires me both from a musical as well as technial standpoint. He was in the truest sense, a musician's musician. He is and will continue to be sorely missed.

I'd also like to thank & applaud the rest of the band, Paul, and especially Jon for continuing. The music you guys make is so important to so many people. I'm glad you're here. Keep the faith and DON'T EVER STOP! :)

I wasn't a big fan of Sava yet, when Criss died. I only had 'Gutter Ballet' on tape. I heard the news pretty fast and spent the day listening to that tape. A talent was lost.

Later, when I became a real fan, I realized what brilliance Criss had. Magic fingers. And mourning became stronger, eventho' time had passed.

Thank god he will be in our minds and hearts with his music, forever.

I was introduced to Savatage by the time that HOR had been released. However, the first four albums I heard were HOTMK, Gutter Ballet, EOT, and Streets, in that order. These four albums show a clear evolution of the Band, from the heavy, fantastic chords and riffs of HOTMK to the Neo-Classical sounds of Gutter Ballet, to the truly inspired music of Streets, and finally to Zack's spectacular voice in EOT. Throughout this time, Criss' playing evolved with the band, and his lightning quick riffs changed from the small solo at the beginning of the song HOTMK to the beautiful solo in the song Edge of Thorns. His speed still amazes me, he resembles Ingwie, but with a lot more feeling. Chris Caffery, Al Pitrelli, and Alex Skolnick are all great players, but it would have been wonderful if they had all gotten to play alongside Criss, as Chris did, not as his replacement.

Jon, I know how you feel; my brother died a year and a half ago. Remember, the best way to accept a sibling's death is to honor his memory.

After reading all of these messages, there isn't much
one can add. Except to wish the sincerest of condolences
to Jon. Sure, the world lost the greatest metal guitarist
of all time, but Jon lost part of him. My brother is my
own lifeblood, and I don't know what I would do if I lost him.
I'm sure I would not display my emotions to the world as
Jon did in 'Alone you breathe'. I 'feel' that song each time
I hear it, and it touches me, deep in my soul. So, to Jon,
keep the faith and don't let the monkeys bring you down.
And to Criss, thank you for the feelings you so deftly
translated into chords and riffs. You will live forever.

Criss, you've never met me but I've admired your ability, demeanor, and artistic flair on that Charvel for the past 12 years. Although we never got the chance to meet (because I unfortunately never had a chance to see Savatage while you were still alive), I feel as though I know you. Through your albums, videos, and interviews that I've collected over the past few years -- and from talking with Johnny Lee and Michelle, Jon, and Doctor K, I have a real sense of what you were like, and the things you stood for. I miss you, yet I don't even know you! Is that crazy, or what??? Buddy, you left behind a legacy that not many artists could approach, and all of us out here wish you were still down here with us, cause we know you'd only scratched the surface of your true ability. But as they say -- "everything happens for a reason," and I'm sure there's a reason God took your life at such a young age. Just know this --- you were loved and are still VERY MUCH missed by all your fans, and your bandmates as well. Me and Johnny talked at length one night about you, and he's having a helluva time dealing with your departure (and he said he still owes ya that 80 bucks!). I know he was best friend and he loved you like a brother. I feel his pain and wish there was something I could do to ease it, but unfortunately that is beyond my realm. Criss, I listen to your albums almost everyday, and still get goosebumps when you let fly on one of your killer solos. Thank you for your music, Criss... My first foray into Savatage was when "Gutter Ballet" was released.
I saw the video for the title track on Headbanger's Ball and I was hooked.
I'd never heard such a beautiful, yet heavy, song. The combination of Jon's
voice and Criss' guitar wizardry was, and still is, almost ethereal.
The majestic and ripping solos Criss concocted were monumental.
Savatage is still great, and I will still listen to them, but it most
definitely is not the same without Criss strapping on the six-string.

The first time I heard the mighty SAVATAGE was back in 1985 after the release of the fantastic "Power Of The Night" Album. The title track splitted my brain and I really looked forward to hear more of this brillant group. Two years later the "Mountain King" LP was released (let's leave out "Fight...") and SAVA became my fave METAL band. Year after year they pull out magic CDs. When Criss died in '93 I was very sad and shocked. Not only because I feared that my favourite band will die, too but because SAVATAGE became an important part of my life and I thought I could feel the pain Jon and the guys felt, too. I had the luck to see Criss play live two times and it was fantastic. Without him the band is not the same but they are stil the best band in the world!!! It was really emotional to see SAVA play live without Criss, especially during "Alone You Breathe" and I will never forget the atmosphere in the club during these minutes. Criss, be sure, we won't forget you. It's always the same but "...still the orchestra plays". Cheers, God bless you! Martin, Hamburg, July 30, 1997.

Even for someone like myself who is not very musically inclined, I know musical brilliance when I hear it. Criss's playing
was nothing short of spectacular. Everybody knows the name Van Halen, and many know the name Steve Vai. Yet, if you were to
mention the name Criss Oliva, most people would say they had never heard of him. It is quite a shame, for when he was alive,
you would not have been able to find a better guitarist on the planet. Even now, when I listen to Criss's playing, I am still
in awe of his wizardry. Van Halen you say? Yeah. Steve Vai you say? Uh-Huh. Criss played with emotion, and it made his guitar
sound that much more powerful. I think that it is safe to assume that most Savatage fans think as I do. Criss was a unique talent,
and he will always be sorely missed. His music will live on, and hopefully, more people will discover the magic that was Criss
Oliva.

Who would have thought? Who could have guessed? The first Savatage album I ever heard was Power Of The Night, and right then, I knew I liked the sound. They were different that the tradional "music" back then.
Next for me was Hall of The Mountain King, and then I was in love. I couldn't believe the music and talent put into that. Each album following was better than the last. Criss Oliva became my inspiration. His dedication to music, the way he played, the amount of time he put into making his sounds unique and beautiful.
I am sorry. I am trying to find a way to express myself, and say how much I miss Criss...

I think that Criss Oliva has been the best guitar player of all the times, even better that Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Steve Morse or Jimi Hendrix. More complete than them: perfect solos, unique style, a GOD in songwriting (this is the greater difference). Savatage is a form of life. The first song i heard was "the dungeons are calling" , and since then I am a fan. Savatage, Criss and Jon have change my life. The feelings of his songs are indescribable, arenīt of this world.
CRISS and SAVATAGE, I love you !

By the time I found Savatage, I was too late to see you live, but I heard your works in the songs you left us. Your style was awesome, and is awesome. You'll be missed, but the dream still lives on.

I would like to share a special moment I had with Chris on his final tour. We had the pleasure of seeing Savatage play a small club in Fayetteville, NC on the "Edge of Thorns" tour. Before the show, Chris came out and was hanging around the bar, staying to himself, watching the opening band. I recognized him and went up to say hello. I was amazed that the people around him didn't realize who he was...but Chris always had that chameleon-like ability to blend and not be noticed unless he chose to. He greeted us and we spoke for about fifteen minutes before he had to go backstage. We spoke about music, the tour, the radio success of "Edge of Thorns", the failed Savatage/Fates Warning tour, and more. Chris was so excited about the new cd's success and expressed "...it's about fuckin' time man, you know !!!". This moment became a haunted yet cherished memory for me once I learned of his death. I felt such a personal loss and a tragedy for the music world as a whole. Chris's signature guitar sound will never be replaced...and it's such a shame that we will never know how much more he would have given us. I discovered Savatage with "Gutter Ballet" and always told people..."This is what Queen should be doing musically", and I turned many people and friends into Savatage fans. A final note: The crowd was small the night we saw them, but Chris, Zack, and the guys gave it all they had...as if there were 5,000 people there instead of 100. I always respected them for that. Chris's doubling guitar sound will be missed, but I will always continue to spread his music to as many people as I can. Thanks to Savatage for keeping the dream alive !!

I don't want to say too many words on this, but: there will be never such a great musician and songwriter as Criss was in the music-scene. His inheritance will live on in the hearts of many, many people. And I'm one of them...
I'll be right there, I'll never leave, and all I ask of you's BELIEVE...

No one else could find such a remarkable balance between
technical wizardry and emotion like Criss has. The critics
may have underrated his playing...but his true fans never have.
Music like Criss' will never die.

Your good buddy Matt Laport is a great admirer of you and you were
legend to him. I have always loved Savatage since the day I first
heard the tunes that make my heart pound. I met your brother John
and hung out with him at a number of occasions. Matt was offered the
job to replace you as lead guitarist but did not because of personal
reasons. Reasons I respect. See you on the other side. Scottie D

I first heard Savatage about a year ago. The first album I heard was Streets. I was never really into metal before, but there was something about the musical sound and the lyrics that spoke to me. The words from Streets have made a difference in my life, and I owe it all to Criss and Jon. Thank you Criss for stopping by on your eternal journey to bless us with your music. Although you are gone, you will always live on through your music, your fans and the continuing Savatage legacy.

It is a pity that Criss died, I believe that Savatage could be one of the largest metal bands if he hadn't been killed. I have become a Savatage fanatic starting with Handfull of Rain and learned about the earlier stuff like Streets. One of the best bands I've ever heard, 90 % of their songs are top notch and that makes it hard to choose a favorite.

I first heard Savatage almost 6 years ago. A friend introduced me to them by letting me borrow her Gutter Ballet tape. The harmonious blend of piano and guitar immediately caught my attention. The music grew on me like nothing ever has before, and I found myself with a favorite band where before, I could never name just one shining example of fine musicianship. I never knew of Criss's death until I saw the inlay for Handful Of Rain. I was saddened that his death did not warrant greater public notice, and that his life was taken so tragically. I wish that the whole world could know what a loss Criss was, instead of seeing him shrouded in obscurity, with only friends, family, and fans to proclaim his light. There was such talent and power behind everything he played. . . How else could someone I never even met touch my heart just by my listening to a song? Impossible, some say, but whenever I listen to songs like "Believe", I know differently. Criss and his wonderful music truly live on in the hearts of his fans, and he will never be forgotten.

I listened to Savatage's songs for almsot 3 years now, and
to this day I am still hooked on the albums Streets, EOT,
Gutter Ballet, and all the other ones. But unlike many
other bands that I listen to all Savatage's songs never
get old when listening to. Most of the time you play a song for
a while and it gets old and you don't like to listen to it, but with
the Streets CD the excellent Guitar playing by Chris Oliva sticks in my mind
now and will stick in my mind forever, as after 3 years the songs are still played over
and over again as if I just got the CD that day. Savatage's songs and Chris Oliva's guitar
playing have changed my life forever, and Savatage's songs will continue to do so. I'd like to thank
Chris and Savatage for making such excellent music that never gets old and always
makes you emotional.

I have listened to Savatage since 1984. They are and have always been a major influence on my playing as a musician.
Criss was immedietley one of my favorite guitarists and still is to this day. When Criss died the world not only lost an inredible compser and guitarist,
but I lost alot of inspiration and a teacher, but he will truly live on in my heart forever.

The first time I heard Savatage was Hall of The Mountain King. The guitar sound was like nothing I've ever heard. I had to get this album. I played it for weeks and weeks. I was addicted to Criss' sound. His playing was like nothing I've ever heard. No other guitar player sounded like that. I lost track of Savatage right after Edge of Thorns came out. I am sorry I did. When I signed on to AOL in April of 96, I found Savatage again. I started to find out what the band was up to. I was then devastated. I started to read about Criss' death. I was in shock. How could this be? To this day no other guitar player has even come close to the sound and passion that Criss played with. I salute Savatage for going on. He will surely be missed. We love you Criss!!

Savatage has been my favorite band for many years. My friend introduced me to the album streets and since then I have collected everything I could by them. I was very upset when I heard that Chris had passed away. I learned of it two weeks before I was gonna go see them in Maryland. Chris's style of playing was a style of his own and nobody else will ever compare to him. His playing was so intense that every note holds you in a trance. Im glad that Savatage still goes on and they are still my favorite but it will never be the same without Chris.

I am a very recent Savatage fan. I first started listening about 2 years ago, when I picked up "Handful Of Rain", because Alex Skolnick was playing on it, and he had been in one of my other favorite groups, Testament. I loved the album, so I went off and bought "Gutter Ballet". My life was instantly changed when I heard it for the first time. Criss' playing was emotional beyond belief, words don't even do justice describing how deeply the music touched me. I knew just why in the course of a few seconds why the world missed him so much. That summer I set out on a trek and bought every single Savatage album there was. When I read later in a newspaper article that he was killed by a drunk driver, I dedicated my entire column in the newspaper I work for as a tribute to Criss. Anything Criss played grabbed my emotions, and no other guitar player could do quite that. Every album is excellent, and I think I will always be inspired by him. Few people may appreciate his incredible talent, but those who do are incredibly dedicate, and for good reason. He shall be remembered as a truely innovative musician alongside (if not above) Mozart, Trey Azagthoth, Eddie Van Halen, and Cliff Burton. RIP my friend, you will always have a place in our hearts...

I first heard Savatage 3 years ago when a friend sent me a tape of various songs which were his favorites. Although I am a late fan, that doesn't change the affect this music has had on my life. When I heard the Criss had been killed, I was saddened to a great degree. The world lost a truly brilliant and talented guitarist. He will never be forgotten by me, or the other fans out there. God has a time and place for everyone to be called home, and at times we don't understand why. Criss is in a better place, surrounded by angels like he himself was here on earth.

I have always been a fan of heavy metal since the early 1980's but for some reason I never listened to Savatage until HOR came out on the radio (just luck that I was actually listening to the radio that night). I kknow that many Sava-fans think I am a Sava-come -lately fan but I am the biggest Sava-fan that I know. DAC is probably my favorite CD. One night, during the winter of 1996, I was listening to Follow Me and it hit me hard. Even though I never listened to him while he was alive, I began mourning for him three years after his death. It was very powerful.
I have heard many great heavy metal and blues guitar players and I don't think Criss was technically the best. He was, however, the most underrated (badly) and without a doubt, my favorite ever. He could play out of tune and make it sound great. I miss him terribly.

Time only heals when you're letting go.
Somehow I don't think I'll ever let go of the memory of
the beauty, the passion, the magic that was and will
always be Christopher Michael Oliva.

Words can not begin to express how his life and passing have
impacted me. I listen to songs like "Believe" and "If I Go Away"
over and over again, finding each one's mournful irony and
painful beauty more devastating than the last time.

The Kingdom of Heaven shone brighter the morning of
October 13, 1993, for the Lord chose to call him home.
Far too young, far too soon, he was not taken away from us,
but given to the angels. I'll be right there, I'll never leave.
All I ask of you,
is Believe.

I was devastated when the tragic news about Crissī death was announced.
I was never able to see Savatage live with Criss on guitar.
However, I have some video recordings of him and the band from 1990 Tour, and he was really doing everything right.
I always see Savatage as the Criss & Jon band, with Jonīs Vocals and Crissī pounding heavy guitar.
Now the band lives on with Criss as (Iīd like to say) the Ghost in the ruins.
He must be thrilled to see his brother and his buddies doing a good job down here.
Letīs just not forget that what was once started by Criss and Jon, is now continuing to the eternity....Hopefully.
R.I.P Criss....

Words cannot express how I feel. I don't think I will ever "heal." I'm glad the band is still making music, but I've come to feel that it's not really Savatage without Criss. I love the current Savatage for what it is but am tortured by what it's not. Criss is really the reason that I love Savatage so much. It was his guitar playing that made Savatage so brilliant. Criss and Mozart are my musical idols, for Criss' guitar playing and Mozart's music are the only music which really touches my soul and in which I hear such absolute brilliance and perfection. If only it had been Criss playing "Mozart and Madness," but... Criss, like Mozart, will live forever through his music.

Guitars are what draw me to any band. They're the first thing I listen for, and if I like what I hear, I usually then get the album. However, with my experiences with Criss Oliva, things were different. My first Sava-experience was seeing the video for "Edge of Thorns," and not only was the guitar-work for that track absolutely mind-numbing, but the rest of the album was nothing less than sensational. Throughout the year, I added to my new Sava-collection, but I listened to the EOT album on a daily basis. And then, I heard the news. My new guitar idol had been taken from us, and for the first time in my life, I was emotionally jarred by the death of a celebrity. No one's playing had ever moved me so much; no one's talent had ever struck me as much. I regret never having the opportunity to meet him or see him play live, but I feel that all fans preserve his spirit by believing in him, his music, and his legacy. Rock on, Criss...

I am glad that the band decided to continue, and keep the
'orchestra playing' for Criss... still I can't help but wonder
what the new music would sound like if Criss were playing it.
The guy was a phenomenon--his playing was incredible and
just continued to get more impressive all the time.
His loss is tragic, and he will be missed forever, but his
memory lives on through the music, the band, and the fans...

Love you Criss... Rest peacefully!
