I went to high school with all the guys in the band. I remember when Savatage (then known as Avatar) played at the Astro Skate. They rocked the place! Criss was spectacular! I was a follower for life. Then came the beach concert at Sunset Beach in Tarpon...what a great time! I remember the little shack near alternate 19 where you guys would practice. I used to ride my motorcycle across the street and here you jam louder than the engine. It was a special time in my life that I will never forget. Criss, I can only bet the music in Heaven has improved since your arrival! Love you Brother...Keith

I never really got a chance to see Savatage perform live but their music was always part of my Saturday night hang out collection. It's sad to think that all that talent was snuffed out in a second by a drunk driver. Chris will always be in my heart as well as his music and my thoughts go out to his brother and the remaining members of the band. Chris will rule forever, if not here then as a ghost in the ruins...ROCK ON SAVATAGE

In Russia there are a lot of examples of the "magic number".
these are the ages 27 to 37. A lot of great poets,
and musicians ended their life tragically and unexpectedly at
these ages. I see, that this doesn't know the difference between countries
I agree with the saying that big tallents die young, very sorry that
I came to States too late, and didn't get a chance to meet Criss in Person.
But the Savatage albums are among my favorite, which I listen several times a day,
this is the way of my expressing the admiration.
Criss, you'll live forever in the hearts of your fans

Criss died too young like many good guitar players. To name one: Randy Rhoads.
Only the best die young.

Many years ago,I've worked as a guitar teacher. One week after
Criss has died, one of the guys came to me to show me the
new Savatage video "Edge of thorns".It was from MTV's
Headbangers Ball. After the video they brought this sad
message to me.I got shocked and stopped teaching for a
while.Like no other guitarist in the world he had formed
my style.I never had a teacher, so Criss style of playing
was the best teacher I ever had.It was raw,it was wild, but
always melodic. So I tried to work it out for me.Learning
every song, breathing every note.I'm playing in a german
metal band."Sirens" and "Mountain king" became standard in
our live shows."Believe" been played during a benefit for
a friend of us who died in '99.Through the next month we're
recording our first full-length CD.We're about to add
"Power of the night" to "Sirens" and "Mountain king"
(3 Covers/ 15 of our own).Just to keep the spirit of Criss
alive.
I never had the luck to meet him.But I'm very happy about
the fact, that Chris Caffery keeps a hand over his work.
His live-performance during Criss' classics is a small
relieve to a wounded soul.
What could I say? Only the good die young? I believe that
Criss never really dies.He lives on in our hearts. And as
long as I'm able to play, a piece of him lives in my
playing.I like the new line-up,the music is still fantastic.
But noone in the world is able to take back what we've lost.
One of the best.Or like I believe: The Best! After every new
experience I find my way back to him and his playing. It's
like coming home.

Hope you understand!
Greetings from Savaland! Greetings from germany!

Well Criss, it's our 6th Christmas Eve since you left us, but as that little paragraph above states, I fully believe our hero is in a better place. I hope to meet you there one day as I'm sure many, many other rock n rollers do. I don't know what the purpose in your being taken from us was but I guess it isn't for me to figure out. May your soul live on forever..........

My introduction to Savatage was the "Power of the Night" album, which I purchased because of the killer cover artwork. As soon as I heard the album, I purchased Sirens, and Dungeons Are Calling, and continued getting everything they made; not because of the artwork, but because of Criss Oliva's incredible guitar work. I was fortunate to have met him and the rest of the band at The Bayou in Washington D.C. during their Power of the Night tour, and it seems like it was just yesterday. I had heard that Criss passed away but until tonight, I didn't realize this incredible musician and person was taken from the world by a drunk driver. What an absolute shame. My heart goes out to Jon, Dawn, and the rest of the Oliva family. Thanks for allowing me the opportunity to hear such inspiring songs. Savatage has truly been a very postive motivating force in my life and will continue to be. Criss lives on. He must be smiling when he sees my 4 and 5 year old sons playing air guitar with me to the tunes "Warriors", "Sirens", .... Thanks so much Criss.

The first time I heard any Savatage was Edge of Thorns.I was blown away with the spectacular guitar leads and solos.
The sounds and originality is what still sticks in my mind to this day about Criss. What he could do with that guitar was amazing
My friends and I agree on the whole Edge album a better note could not be substituted in anyof the solos.
It is truly a shame that one of my guitar heroes has passed on.But atleast he is in a better place now,
and may only good things come from his memory.

I can't belive it's been six years since Criss' death! His spirit is still in us! As a fan I am writing this, but it is also important to write this in honor of my husband who is a fellow musician. As Criss had passion in his playing, so does my husband Larry. He looked to him for insperation
and admired his raw edge of playing. He understood Criss as if he were talking directly to him. He found solice in Criss when he couldn't find it anywhere else, and he still does. We are such fans that are second child's middle name is the same as criss, the spelling too! I am thankful to have such a passoinate musician for a husband and a passionate and musician like Criss that people can relate too. It is very hard to find someone who exist with this kind of drive and talent. I have discovered it, but it is a shame that most aren't discovered until they are gone.

Yet another reason to decriminalize pot, and criminalize alcohol. How many times do you hear someone was killed by a driver who had been smoking pot? Almost never! Yet with alcohol, and drunk drivers it's almost a daily thing.
Drunk Driving should be a capital crime.

Criss had one of the most distinct guitar sounds i've ever heard. He was able to play it fast, play it hard, but also play with feeling. It's tragic that he is now gone. My thoughs extend to the Olivia family, for they--and the world, ahve lost someone truly great. But Criss lives on in the music he played and in the hearts of his fands worldwide...

I too have a brother and his loss was great.
I have seen savatage several times in the early days.
One I remember well was at janis landing
it was july 20 early 90's I was shocked to find out that jon's birthday was the same. I left florida too get away from all the hoopla.
i know that jon wants to be at peace also.
But I'd like to say KEEP WRITING BROTHER you are the Edgar Allen Poe of this century you may one day die. But your words live on........

May God bless You and your family and may the Father hold Criss as close as you and he.

There are many things in life that cannot be replaced. Criss Oliva was guitarist that could not easily be replaced by any other musician. From the very first moment I started to listen to Savatage I felt this unique emotions that only Criss could create. It is tragic when life ends so fast, without a greeting, and without a thought of death. May your soul rest in peace, Criss. For your music keeps us all still "alive".

Dear Sirs, it saddens me deeply, as a new Savatage fan, to hear about the tragic and untimely death of one of the world's truly great guitarists. Too many of the greats are lost this way. Criss opened up new doors for me as a musician. He showed me that heavy metal can be melodic and truly, truly glorious. I only wish that his fans and friends could see the memorial that has been given to him on this page by those who cared. May his spirit live on forever, in the Hall of the Mountain King.

Chriss, where to start. Such an amazing player. So many times when I've been feeling depressed, or low, I've listened to your music. Especially "Streets". How many times have I listened to "Believe" and felt the tears start to flow? I guess what I'm trying to say is that you touched so many lives. Thank you. God bless you. Rest in peace.

I have been a Savatage fan since the beginning. Criss oliva was one of the most underrated guitarists of our time. Nobody ripped with more intensity & feeling than Criss. The coolest rhythms of the 80's by any band. Every single person I turned Savatage onto loved it. Best album 'Dungeons are calling', best solo 'Hounds'. Its seems that great metal guitar solos have become extinct damn near. R.I.P. Criss.

Well I've been listening metal from 1989 and in my own opinion Criss is the very best heavy metal guitarist I've ever listened. I miss him a lot, even if his powerful yet so melodic and beautiful solos and riffs are always there in his GREAT albums. To the SAVA band that has continued to play wonderful music throughout the years a BIG THANKS. To the fans that share with me the love to the band SEE YOU ON TOUR or through the WEB. I had the honor and privelege of being the assistant engineer on STREETS. Within just a few days Chriss and I Became close friends. I was further priveleged with the honor of recording Chriss,s solo's. I knew right away that Chriss is one of the greatest guitarist of all time . The six months I spent in the studio with Savatage was th e greatest professional experience of my life. We learnt to dream through his guitar playing that was dripping with emotions. Hellas keeps his memory alive.

Heavy Metal lost a great singer and artist by the name of Criss Oliva. He and his brother Jon was the band. The band hasn't been the same since. Jon Oliva has given the singing role to Zach Stevens and Jon even plays a limited role in the band lately. Cris Oliva 1963-1993, RIP.

I would like to thank everyone out there who has become a Sav' fan and to those who will. I can say from experience that Criss was, (and always will be), absolutely the greatest performance guitarsist ever!!! I had the honor of seeing him and Savatage perform a few months prior to his passing It was an awesome show!!! Criss, you will always be an inspiration to me. You've guided my guitar work to levels I've never thought possible. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I have been a Savatage fan since the mid 80's, when I was
still just a kid. Anyone who has ever listened to Criss and
the band knows that it moves you, it plays itself up and down
your spine. Criss was an amazing artist, and the world was
robbed of something special when he was killed. At least he
can live on in the music of Savatage, in which he will never
die. Goodbye Criss

When I heard you died Criss, I was floored. You being my fave member of
Savatage(and your brother was as well), your loss made the music sound strange,
as if something was missing. You.

How ironic, you and my brother died on the same day (the 17th)only a year and
3 months apart, you were also the same age.

I haven't known Savatage for long and i didn't live by myself the 17th october 1993; But I think it isn't important, I think instead that count much more the irrational feelings which have crossed my mind (and not only the mine) when I have listened to their music and have made me stay without words, out of breathe, remained in suspence between reality and dream. It's miracle this music, "Il miracolo di sentire senza ascoltare", "The miracle to feel without listening", time out the time, space with no limits, the melancholic and human universe, the world, OUR world. Nobody'll ever be able to tell better than Criss has done the anger, the fear, the sadness, the sweetnwss, the loneliness, the silence. The human feelings. So thanks to Savatage and particularly thanks to Criss who made me dream and he'll keep on making it. Forever. "If we want to be near to someone we love, aren't we already?".
Death doesn't exist, even if it leaves inside a sad gap it doesn't destroy the memory of a person an doesn't only remain "the ghost within your eyes/ the whisper in your sighs". Remains all a life, all a soul, all Criss.
It's snowing here. And this strange and white atmosphere makes me think. Of where Criss is now: if he is with other Savatage, if in the fans' heart, if underground, if in the sky or in the sea... It's really true that the best die before their time...But Criss is here now. Here like snow-flakes which are falling down on me.

I was turned onto SAVATAGE by a friend in the early 80s at that point, I was just a begining guitar player i heard a few of criss' licks and i was hooked. The way he could go from playing so intence and hard to just making a couple of notes sound like a synphony really took a hold of me. Since that point i have collected as much of their music as i can find. When i found out he had died i felt like the whole world had just lost something special in the field music, and even though it has taken me this long to write, I still beleive and hope that his music will be listned to and help inspire people to bring out the best in themselves whatever it may be. I know he is greatly missed but the music will never die. And for the short time we had to listn thanks CRISS we miss you.

I first heard Savatage, and Criss' playing on the Hall of
The Mountain King album, and I was blown away by this guys
attack at the guitar. Being a guitar player myself I was
into Rhoads/Malmsteen at the time and in high school. Criss
played different from those guys and it really grew on me.

The emotion that pours out of his notes on the solo for
Legions (of the Night) is just stinging. and his liquid smooth
hammer on ability is always welcome to the ear.

I herad of his passing and it really brought me down. I
had all the old albums thruogh Gutter, and kinda faded away
from listening to other people's music, to write my own.
He is for sure an infuence.

I saw the Gutter Ballet tour in Columbus, OH. and very glad
I did. I was lucky to see him, and the whole band for that
matter perform one kick ass show.

Thanks, Criss and Savatage

Hello all,

After reading some of the previous posts, including one I made a while back, I have noticed something. In many posts there are quotes and variations of the song lyrics used liberally. This alone tells you how meaningful they are. Aside from from offering our heartfelt sympathy to the friends and families there is something more we can do. SPREAD THE WORD! Share the experience that is Savatage with others so that they may also enjoy it.

Years ago when I first heard HOTMK and later SIRENS on the old Zrock I knew that Criss Oliva was the no doubt the real deal!
later on when I heard STREETS I was a little put off by it at first, but when I finally listened to the whole thing in order
I can tell you I was in total awe of this talented human being. What a natural fluid instinct for playing the guitar Criss had!

I have always searched for the perfect overall rock guitarist and looked at (akira, george, petrucci, etc) when all I needed to do was return and listen to Criss!

Whenever I need inspiration and I listen to STREETS again!

Many imitate
Some hesitate
Few elevate like Criss Oliva did!

The heavens part
and the angels weep
Criss's sweet music they now get to keep!

Criss Oliva was (and remains) the finest guitar player that has ever lived. His music, from the raging solos to the intricacies of "Silk and Steel", were played with such emotion that every note embedded itself in the very soul of the listener. Was going through my tape collection recently and came across "Hall of the Mountain King" and "Streets" and immediately put it in my tape player. Cris had the sound to fit his genre, but he had a sound, a feel, that was purely from the heart and very distinctive. He was one of the most underrated. I was also very shocked when I found out about his death just not to long ago when I stumbled

Reading the wall for the past 2 weeks, it's really difficult for me to
say something new. Everything I feel has already been said. Anyway I came
up with this song called OCTOBER 17th 1993. I wrote it on October 15th
and I played it (acc. guitar and vocals) on Sunday the 17th in a students'
hostel in my home city. It was a real success, especially among Savafans
and deep down inside I know Criss heard it and I hope that maybe someday
he'll tell me what he thinks about it. So here goes:

When thy said that metal's dying you came out and rocked them all
Spent your life in tears and sighing, but the pain you've never told
Bits of dreams and grown up wings, you have searched and you found all
But it all came to an ending on that cold Sunday in fall.
Unholy hounds raised their voices and they forced our lives to change
As they cut the road you followed from the gutter to the stage
Your wings were strange, your heart was bleeding, sirens played on your guitar
Here you are now, you're stone you're carving, I think you've gone
a bit too far...

CHORUS:
Our lives are worn, our tears are gone,
Since you went away
Our heart's of stone, our work is done,
Our dreams have gone astray
We miss that time, we have in mind
October '93
I'd give my life, I'd give it all
If you came back to me.

In your life you had to fight with, all the power of the night
When the summer's rain is falling, your memory I have inside
When the morning sun is rising, spreads the night that's like a ring
Legions hail your name from here, to the hall on Mountain King
And I'm roaming through this labyrinth now, as I see you now and then
But the devil he has won it, and tonight he grins again
Though he has so different faces, paragons of innocence
I am praying that tomorrow, is the time when Jesus saves.

CHORUS
BRIDGE:
You never wanted to know, never wanted to see
You've spent all your life in pain misery
Never wanted to go always wanted to stay
'Cause the person you were, were the parts that you played
So you played and you played, through the dark of the night
Leaving us without words, reaching to our minds
You're holding on tight, to a world gone astray
As they charged you for years, you can't pay

You were the way, you were the light,
You were the dark inside the night
You've felt our hopes, you've heard our dreams
And in the dark you've heard our screams
Don't turn away, just take my hand
And let us make our final stand
Let's stay right here, and never leave
They say you're dead, I don't believe

Thank you Criss for everything, as 50% of what I play on the guitar is
SAVATAGE. Thanx Jon for keeping it up. You both made the music that guides
me through life. Jon, thank u also for TSO and DR. BUTCHER.
Johnny, thank you for making me the bass player I am today.
Dawn, keep on going and I'm sure you 2 will meet again.
The rest of you guys, keep it up 'cause I don't know what I'd do without you.
To all of you I say Criss didn't die, as parts of him and his music still
live inside each one of us.

AN ANGEL CAME DOWN, ONE NIGHT TO THE EARTH
A MISSION FROM GOD, TO FIND OUT THE WORTH
OF EVERYTHING THAT, HIS CHILDREN HAD DONE
SINCE THAT WINTER NIGHT, THE BIRTH OF HIS SON

AND THEN A SOUND FILLED THE NIGHT, IN THE COLD WINTER AIR
AND IN THE MIDST OF HIS FLIGHT, IT WAS HOLDING HIM THERE
AND AS HE LOOKED TOWARDS THE EARTH, FOR THE SOURCE OF THIS SOUND
ON THAT COLD WINTER NIGHT, IT WAS PULLING HIM DOWN

TO BRING SOMETHING BACK, THIS ANGEL WAS TOLD
THAT NO ONE COULD TOUCH, BUT ANGELS COULD HOLD
SO ON THAT NIGHT, WHEN THE SKY HAD CLEARED
AMONG ALL THE STARS, AN ANGEL APPEARED

AND THEN A SOUND FILLED THE NIGHT, IN THE COLD WINTER AIR
AND IN THE MIDST OF HIS FLIGHT, IT WAS HOLDING HIM THERE
AND AS HE LOOKED TOWARDS THE EARTH, FOR THE SOURCE OF THIS SOUND
ON THAT COLD WINTER NIGHT, IT WAS PULLING HIM DOWN

The sound the angel had heard was Criss playing!

I had heard of Criss' passing about five years ago, God knows what took me this long to look up the website. I find it strange that a rock stars death like Kurt Cobain in a suicide get's so much more press while the death of an incredible musician like Criss Oliva gets a liner note in a guitar magazine. God bless you Criss, may you rest in peace! To you to Jon, "When the Crowds are Gone" is one of my favorite songs and always will be.

As I heard the message a few years ago, that Chris died, I thought it was
a sick joke. Only hours later someone proved it to me, that Cris was dead.
I have never been able to meet Chris, the first time I went to a Savatage
concert, Chris was already dead.
During the concert in the Melkweg in Amsterdam, they played a part that Chris
realy loved. It was a very beautifull and emotional moment. At that moment it
seemed that the whole audience was directly related to Chris.
I miss him a lot, the way he influenced the Savatage albums was incredable.
When he played, the only thing you would here was the gitar. The sound of
drums, bass and keyboards were put aside, the touching of the snares was the
only sound you would hear.
Thank you Chris for all the moments you gave us!!!

Just wanted to put something up on the wall..I know Criss's death aniversery was not long ago and I haven't seen the band in years..But the 4 times I was able to see them live..(all with Criss by the way and Jon)..I still have yet to see a metal band that has inspired such feelings of fire and ice..As Cold and tingling as it gets and as fast and furious as well. The more I wonder about why it was so good..The more I come to the conclusion it was Criss and Jon that did it all..RIGHT..!
Thanks Guys for all the things you've done for the industry not to mention ME...RIP Criss and you are living on everytime someone posts this wall...*bows humbley*

I don´t know, what so say. Better - I know what to say, but I don´t know how.
Many people changed the world with their deaths, but none changed the world for me more than Chriss´ death. His death changed the world not to a better, but to a worse place for all heavy metal and hard rock fans in the world. All I want to say with this is that I can´t believe in god anymore since his very big misstake six years ago as he took Chriss away.

May his light be an ever burning candle in our hearts and his memory be as unforgotten as his music

After reading all these beautiful messages there is nothing that I can say that hasn’t been said, but I'll try anyway. Criss was the reason I started playing guitar. He was without a doubt the greatest musician ever. His work was so original and unique it could never be replaced or mimicked. I love Savatage but the music is not the same without him. I can only imagine the courage it must have took for Savatage to continue on after Criss's death. Kudos’ guys. The day I heard that Criss was tragically taken from his family a small part of me died as well. I have a hollow feeling inside that cannot be filled. When I listen to most of the crap on the radio today it makes me sad. I hardly even play guitar anymore. I just don't have the heart to play. Then I listen to Criss's playing and play along (the few parts that I can) and it makes me smile and for a brief moment it's like he's still here and the hollow part inside has been filled. But alas the song ends and reality returns. I only hope that somehow, someway he knows how much I, and the millions of his fans around the globe really do miss him and appreciate all he has done for the music industry. I wish you well my friend, I hope you rest in peace. You may be gone but you will never be forgotten. I had the chance to see him play live in 1993 in Buffalo, NY. But I didn't go. Savatage played a club whose owners I knew and I probably could have met him backstage. I didn't go because I had made previous plans and Savatage was supposed to come back to the club again in a few months. Unfortunately Criss passed away before they returned. The point I'm trying to make is that we all take things and people for granted. Every day. Some of us won't admit this but it is true. You never realize what is there in front of you until it is gone. I wish I had taken the opportunity to see Criss perform live when I had the chance. I have a few bootlegs (sorry guys) and I must say that Criss live was ten times better than the studio recordings. When he played you could see that he truly felt what he was playing. His sound, his style they all came from within. Almost a magic aura from within. Anyway the magic is gone, but NEVER forgotten. Peace My Friend!

I just want to thank everybody in the band, and everybody who has supported the band (Mr. & Mrs. Oliva, I owe you two more than I know how to say), and helped to keep Criss' memory alive. Savatage has been there for me in some of my darkest hours, and some of my greatest. There are times where it feels like no words can move me or speak to my soul; and during those times, all I have to do is hear Criss or Jon play. They both remind me alot of Mozart: every note, and every moment of silence, is pure prescence of soul; pure honesty, pure heart and soul, every time.

I saw Sava play in Detroit in `98, and you guys are amazing. Where other bands might have/would have cancelled the show due to "low ticket sales", or whined about the venue (not to mention the Murphy-factor: the unforseen near-riot that was in full swing as the concert was getting out), you guys didn't. When other bands would have said "Hey, our singer has the flu, we're not goin' on", the show went on. Hell, it didn't just "go on", you guys came in & everyone in the band blew me away, and not just as musicians, but as real down-to-earth damn-cool people. And I gotta say that Caffery carries the memory of Criss like no other guitarist on this earth ever could; thanks man.

I remember you Criss... I'll never forget you and the impact that you've had, and continue to have every day, on my life.

Still the orchestra plays...

Criss, six years ago for some reason known only to God you were taken away from your fans, your friends, and your family. I guess heaven wasn't bright enough without you there. I have your autograph and I have your CDs and the wonderful sound of your guitar in my mind, but it's different now that you're gone. I think many of us probably took for granted the fact that you might not always be here and we failed to tell you what you meant to us and how inspirational your solos and playing were to us. Now we have to tell you from this wall. I'm sure you can see it though. I feel your presence around me so often that I don't really think of you as gone from us. We sure miss the thought of new Criss Oliva solos though, and we miss your face and the magic you wrought with your hands. We were truly blessed to have you here even if it was for but a short time. Thank you for the legacy you left behind you Criss. Your crowds are never going to be gone as long as me and my other sava-friends are here.

To Dawn, Jon, and the rest of Criss's family, I want you to know that my thoughts and prayers are with you today. I also want you to know that Criss was also lucky to have you all with him while he was on this earth. I fully believe that Criss is with you as I type. Thank you all for being what you were to Criss.

Finally, I just want to wrap this up by saying that if you do decide to drink that's terrific, but for God's sake and the sake of others, hand over the keys before you take your first sip. You never know who's life you may be saving. Well, the tears are starting back up so I'd better say goodnight. Criss, remember that we love you and we always will. Savatage forever. Criss Oliva forever. Peace.

Hard to believe it is 6 years since the untimely passing of Criss. I still am a bit surprised at how much it shocked and hurt, and how empty I felt the day I heard it. I saw him once live, but never met or knew him. Yet through his music he was a part of me, and through his music he continues to be. A bitter sweet legacy. Criss' music makes his death more widespread in its pain, but it also keeps him alive. My condolences to all who truly knew him personally and grieve for the man. God Bless.

Rest in peace Criss.

Criss will forever live on as the greatest guitarist i have ever heard. I always hear from people how Criss isnt technical enough...but as Steve Vai said "you can't view guitar as a competition. what are you going to compete about? who can play the fastest? there's so much more to it than that." Criss, while being able to play amazingly fast at times, managed to find the elusive "more than that" that Vai spoke of. "Summer's Rain", "Ghost in the Ruins", "Temptation Revelation", and "Follow Me", im amazed that any one person could tap into such a higher power. Criss will always be remembered by his fans, and to Dawn and Jon you have from all of us our deepest sympathies. RIP Criss.

It's 6 years ago today that you left us on earth, but you remain forever in our hearts and live on always through the great guitar riffs of Savatage which you created and which will never die.
I only saw you once in London and I met you at the Marquee on the Streets Tour. The photos taken by myself at that show remain a treasured memory and your autographs on my 2 fully autographed CDs Streets and Gutter Ballet remain a priceless, irreplaceable tribute I treasure forever.
I also remember with much happiness that meeting with you and Johnny-Lee Middleton backstage after the show. I'm so glad I did get to meet you (I know so many who love you never did) and I can tell them all that you were very special both as a human being and as a great guitarist.
I will always love you and never forget you; now on the anniversary of your tragic death, or on your birthday or at christmas when I hang a ball on my tree in your memory. You were special, you were unique and you were one of the best. God can never replace you, may he always treasure you as much I do.
Love you always

Criss,

You are so sorely missed. RIP

Christopher Michael Oliva

Again it's been another year
and yet the memories still are clear
The stage, the sound, the man we knew
who always kept his music true
His songs they touched our very soul
lifted us and made us whole

His music has since long inspired
those who've had the deep desire
to duplicate his "special" sound
of fingers "dancing" up and down
His loss we will forever regret
but his memory we will never forget

"Legend", the word that best describes
Criss, his music, what he was inside
"Down to Earth" - "Like me and you"
gifted, talented, yet humble too
To his fans right from the start
he gave his time, his soul, his heart

And so today this day is kept
in quiet thought and deep respect
To the Oliva family, you're in our thoughts
Our love, our prayers, for your heartfelt loss
Know that Criss is in a "special" place
Safe within God's glorious grace

In the memorys of the black world around us,
We see and catch hold of the falling stars,
In the distance we hear the chours rythm,
And sing that last few enchanting bars,
To the hymnal coming our final day,
In heavens gate we all shall play,
The gleeming notes of God above,
Whispered words of his love,
Feelings gone of all the loss,
Confused cold questions of the cost,
The price for friends and family stolen,
Broken hearts and anger swolen,
Drift away upon the sea,
For together once and again we'll be,
Clinging tight in embrace,
When I see your smiling face,
The pains I now on this ground,
Vanish within the ringing sound,
Of glorys trumpet playing clear,
Tomorrow brother we'll meet you there.

I never wanted to know - never wanted to see ...
Chriss .. you never waisted your time ..

Eternal brood the shadows on this ground,
Dreaming of centuries that have gone before;
Great elms rise solemnly by slab and mound,
Arched high above a hidden world of yore.
Round all the scene a light of memory plays,
And dead leaves whisper of departed days,
Longing for sights and sounds that are no more.

Lonely and sad, a specter glides along
Aisles where of old his living footsteps fell;
No common glance discerns him, though his song
Peals down through time with a mysterious spell.

See you on the other side

There is nothing that can be said about Criss that hasn't already been said. To Dawn, I know these past six years must have been very hard for you. I sincerely hope that things get easier for you over time. Nothing can ever bring Criss back, but hopefully people will learn a valuable lesson about drinking and driving. To Jon and the rest of the Olivas, my thoughts go out to you.

Criss,
Well, there's not much to say that hasn't already been said. You came into my life too as I was going through some very difficult times. But once I heard your music, I had something to live for, something that I looked forward to in life. I could always come home and pop in one of your cds, and my day would all be worth it. And I feel that it is because of you and your music that I am still here today; your the reason that I stuck around long enough to meet a wonderful girl who is now my wife. I just wanted to let you know that though this candle may burn for a short time only, you will always hold a very special place in my heart. And so, I just want to say thank you. You are, and always will be, my hero. I love and miss you.

I have always admired Savatage since the first time I was flipping through channels and saw Jon Oliva singing "When The Crowds Are Gone" on MTV. I was instantly attracted to a band that could produce such interesting orchestrations and rock so hard. The lyrics seemed to be a part of me, like something I would have written...something about my life. The best memories I have of my high school days were spending time with my high school sweetheart and listening to metal, especially Savatage. We'd sing with it, play it loud, and listen to it over and over. The songs were special to us because they had depth and meaning...powerful and we loved them. Years passed and people go their seperate ways and he was tragically killed in a terrible car accident earlier this year. I have not been the same ever since, feeling that a part of me is gone that I can never regain. Hearing the Savatage songs again takes me back to windy, cool days when we were together and singing and things were all right in the world. Criss, you were an inspiration to so many of us and lost at such a young time in your life. Savatage, do you realize how many people you have an effect on? Your songs are everything that I wanted to say but never could get past my pride to do it; now I sing to the night sky alone but I think I am heard...I will always have your songs and the memories in my heart to hold on to a special time in my life. That is one thing that can never die...

Chriss was one of the most underated and overlooked guitarist of the 80's. He had a very distinct style and he
had just as much talent as Malmsteen or Van Halen, however He did not recieve the recognition that He should have gotten.

I have been a fan of Savatage for 11 years. When Criss died, I was moved, but, to be honest, it didn't affect me to an enormous extent, the tragedy was simply not close enough to home, I mean, it affected me because it affected my favorite band, and the closeness of the brothers Oliva was obvious. But that was about it. It didn't strile close enough to home. It was somewhere else. That is until I heard 'Alone You Breathe'. My own brother and I are extremely close, we are best friends, and we are both fascinated by the theatre, and the haunting words of this brother's lament for the things that wouldn't be touched my soul in a place no other thing outside my own family life has ever reached. Travis and I have since agreed that when one of us passes on, this song will be played at the funeral (unless Jon asks me not to). I can only form some simple, abstract idea of that feeling, but the abstraction itself frightens me enough to gain some sort of empathy for Jon. My love and hopes for happiness go out to Jon. And as for Criss..... Long live metal- Long live Criss Oliva, he shall never die. R.I.M.

CHRISTOPHER MICHAEL OLIVA. What can be said about the man that has not been said before? I’m not going to say it over again how talented and how under-rated a guitarist he was. Its been said a million times before. To me Criss is a unique guitar player. All these supposed guitar heroes that are shoved by the bucket in our face by record companies and the media are not even shoe-sole high to what Criss was. He is unparalleled. Forever. I think of him everyday, whether or not I’m listening to SAVATAGE. Criss’ legacy lives through each and every SAVATAGE song - past, present and future. But most importantly in my heart, since the 17th of October 1993….CHRISTOPHER MICHAEL OLIVA LIVES! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

Back in '91/'92, I had the pleasure of hanging out with Savatage in Baltimore. They did an autograph session at Record & Tape Traders (where I worked) and then played Hammerjacks that night. I don't think anyone there will ever forget that night...or the opening band! I was standing with the band during the opening act (who shall remain nameless) and Criss was telling me about this band when the unexpected happened...the opener was thrown out of Hammerjacks! The hard way -- equipment and all! I think that Criss was as shocked at the on-stage antics of this band as the crowd was! I don't think I have ever enjoyed a night so much (Criss had me laughing so hard I thought I would split in two). Then (when the laughter subsided), Savatage took the stage and mesmerized all of us! This was the first time I had ever seen Savatage and I am honored that I got to spend time with Criss...

To the family and friends of the band, my sympathy. You lost a good friend and a very talented musician. He is missed greatly! My wish to you for continued success!

I unfortanantly did not find out about the loss of one of the most under-rated
guitar heros of all time....until about a year after his death...

Chris was probablly thee MOST influential player on me out of all of the greats..
Including Frank Marino..I ( with out realizing it) incorperated much of his style into my own playing..

A true unsung , He left a VERY big gap in the guitar players world....
Needless to say it was a great shock to me when I heard he was no longer with us..

My soul goes out to his brother Jon....

I would like just to say " Thank you Chris.." for the the influence you had on me...A salute to my one hero in the music world ..

I would first like to give my condolences to Dawn, Jon, the rest of the family and friends who knew Criss well. I was heartbroken when I heard the news of his death, but I can't imagine the hell that you all must be going through. Criss was and still is a phenomenal musician... no one could every come close to his style. I hold a tremendous amount of respect for Criss as well as the band. He plays with such pure, raw emotion....something that you don't hear much of these days. I sat here last nite and read the wall for over two hours.... when I read the entries posted my Dawn Olivia I cried.... the pain you must go through every day. Criss may be gone but he will never be forgotten... he has his wings now and he's up in heaven putting on one hell of a show for the big man himself.... I can hear him playin' now.

Now I feel the need to express my feelings for the lowlife scumbag that took Criss away from us all. I read an entry last nite posted by someone who goes by the name Human Being. HOW DARE YOU compare that guys hell to what Dawn, Jon and the rest of us feel!!! He got behind the wheel of his car when he had no business doing so.... he robbed Jon of his brother, he robbed Dawn of her husband, he robbed the rest of his family and friends from seeing his smile and hearing his music, he robbed his children of their father, and he robbed his fans of a talented and phenomenal musician. And for what, just so he could have a few drinks..... thanks , but no thanks.... I will hate that man till my last breath here on earth!!!! If I would have been the judge on the case I would've sentenced him to life in prison.... even the death penalty!!! He had prior convictions for driving under the influence...his blood alcohol content was way above the legal limit. But all he got was a 2 year jail sentence...while the rest of us were condemned to a life time of hell and pain. As for me, I will never forgive that man for taking Criss away from all of us. My heart goes out to Dawn, Jon, the entire Olivia family, as well as the millions of Savatage fans around the world... I feel your pain. May you rest in peace Criss... hope to meet you on the other side someday.... it would be my greatest honor. After reading the wall last nite everyone has inspired me to do a tribute page on my web site to the greatest guitarist in the world.

You believed in things that
We will never know
You were out there drowning
But it never showed
Till inside a rainswept night
You just let go

May your spirit soar with the eagles Criss

It is true that noone can easily express the way he is touched by Savatage...When I first heard their "Gutter Ballet"release I understood that this was no ordinary band,it was one of the greatest; and of course my personal favorite. For me Savatage are personal and sacred, even if I really don't believe in god.John's vocals and Criss's guitar playing is probably the best combination ever, and I am sure that only few other bands can offer such great emotional impact.Melancholy,happiness,fury,insanity... all reaching you so directly.Criss's death is a great loss, but I am sure that we are the ones who continue feeling pain, not Criss.

I heard Savatage for the first time the same week as Chris died. I was caught for life! Savatage makes more than music.

I thank you, Chris, for my life would not have been the same without you. May God take care of you, and may your musical legacy live on till the end of time.

"Lord bring on the night. Wrap it all around me. Let it hold me tight. Soak up all that I bleed."

I PRAY WE ALL WILL REMEMBER CHRIS AND HONOR HIS MEMORY; THE BAND, HIS FAMILY AND HIS FANS!

24 Hours Ago, Silk and Steel, Hall of the Mountain King, Jesus Saves... they are all classic Criss Oliva guitarist work, and I absolutely love them. Ever since I saw the video of 24 Hours Ago (that was the first song I ever heard from Savatage) I have worshipped Criss Oliva, and when I heard about his death, I was broken. I can never replace the memory of Criss in my mind. Jon has been a god for me for years, but still it doesn't seem the same without his brother. Thank you. I hope that Savatage's own crowds will never be gone. And they won't, I'm sure of it.

When I read the "Human Being" entry b-4 yours, it sickened and saddend me. As I lost my one and only love in that crash - and almost my own life as well. I have lived and will live each and every day of my life after that crash in both pysical, and mental Hell.

I am very greatful for people like you who take the time to share thier feelings, and memories on the wall, it is sort of a soothing therapy for me.

Even after 6 years, it is very hard for me, after all we were together for 16 years, even though we were only 30 when he died. He was my 1st and only love.

I am surviving off his memory. Time heals, but it never goes away. The memorial wall on the web site brings me peace, As does his music.
And people like you.

Thank you again
Peace

Dawn.... I truley feel for you and your family... like I said before.. it is a nightmare. We all know that life goes on and I'm sure Criss would want it that way. But we can all still appreciate his love and passion for music still. So we shouldn't be unhappy or sad, but be glad for what he did give to us. Thank you Criss for always being there for me.... even today.

THE ONLY THING I CAN SAY THAT EXPRESES MY FEELINGS IS THAT WHEN I HEARD HIM SAYING "MMM HERE WE GO" AT "GHOST IN THE RUINS" LIVE ALBUM I STARTED CRYING AS AN INSTANT REACTION.NOW, ABOUT 7 YEARS AFTER THE TIME HE LEFT US IT IS TIME FOR SAVATAGE TO MAKE THE "POETS AND MADMEN" ALBUM IN A WAY THAT IT REMINDS HIS EXTREMELY HEAVY-OUTREAGEOUS RIFFS AND SOLOS AS THEY WHERE SHOWN IN THE 80's.I HOPE HIS-OUR FAMILY IS GOOD.GOD BLESS HIS SOUL AND ARM HIS HANDS WITH A DIVINE GUITAR TO BLOW GOD'S BRAIN AND THE ENTIRE HEAVEN!

My first exposure to Savatage was from Joe Anthony of KISS radio here in San Antonio. The first song I heard was Sirens. It was some time in the 80s. Jon's vocals and Criss's guitar made me buy that album. Each album I heard after that I had to have, mostly because of Criss's guitar work. It was different from everything else... I got to see Savatage when they toured for Gutter Ballet at the Showcase. It was one of the best live shows I have seen. But now, it just isn't the same without him.

I would like to first of all thank Criss for giving me the new desired inspiration and awe of his playing. I just recently picked up Edge of Thorns cd and i love all of it. I put him up there with other inspirations like Steve Vai and John Petrucci. He has inspired me soo much that i went out today (Sept. 16,1999) and got 3 more cd's . I enjoy them thoroughly now and hope that his memory lives on as a gifted and well trained guitarist for Savatage. Thank you again Criss and always rock on.

I first heard Savatage on MTV as I was healing from a compound fracture of both bones of my left forearm just below the wrist that left my guitar playing or even using my fret hand in doubt. I was heavely into Malmsteen and other melodic guitarists, siting around watching Head Bangers Ball and missing playing my guitar, when the video for Hall Of The Mountain King comes on. I was immediatly freaking out over this band that was new to me. All the speed of anyone else out there and a sense of melodic agression and phrasing that brought a tear to my eye. After about a year and a half my hand was able to play guitar like I was able to before I almost lost it, and I began jamming to Savatage's Hall Of The Mountain King, which was all I could find locally(I was living in Fort Wayne at the time and I could not find other releases untill I moved to Tampa in '89 to pursue music) from Sava. I have always loved to solo to entire songs of Savatage at home because the rhythms are excellent for melodic ideas(not to mention the vocals) I used to catch them whenever I could after I moved to the Tampa Bay area and feel fortunate to have seen them almost over 20 times including a couple of practices and hearing some mixing down at the studio while there with the guitar tech. One time when I was at the guitar techs apartment playing his guitar that Criss had given him, when someone knocked on the door so I continued to play through the effects setup he had that sounded just like Criss's. It was a minute or two before he came back into the room
where I was playing with his company, and I had my back to the door sitting on a couch not really paying attention to who came over or the conversation they were having. I was just enjoying playing some of my original stuff through Sava sound effects, when I look out of the corner of my eye and see Criss watching me play and listening(this was the first time I met him and not expecting to, I suddenly could not think of a thing to play and immediatly began to turn a few different shades of red) He says hey, thats a pretty cool riff, mind if I play the guitar for a minute (yea right, like I would turn down a lesson right in front of me after trying to learn some of his tricks by ear and by being in the front row at shows to pick things up) He immediatly began to play some very melodic and fluid solos over the melody of the riff I had been playing. What a nice guy, I thought he would laugh at me when he heard me playing, but he paid me a compliment. I was around Criss several times after that at practices, backstage at shows, and in the studio a couple of times with the guitar tech, and Criss was always a nice guy that was never to big for anyone. That is something I will always remember him for that sets him apart from all the other supposed virtuosos who are so full of themselves. I would also like to thank him for expanding the scope of what a solo in a metal song can be, and the influence on my own style of playing. Thanks Criss, your music will alway live on in the hands and stainless steel picks of others, who you're music has touched and affected their own playing.

AS A GUITAR PLAYER FOR ME CRISS PLAYED SOLOS THAT EMOTIONALLY TOUCH ME.HE HAD A UNIQUE STYLE THAT TO ME WAS MORE FROM THE HEART RATHER THAN JUST TRYING TO PLAY A ZILLION NOTES A MINUTE.I JUST NOW AFTER ALL THESE YEARS WAS ABLE TO FIND HALL OF THE MOUNTAIN KING ON CDAND AM SAD AT THE LOSS OF CRISS ALL OVER AGAIN.MORE GUITAR PLAYERS SHOULD TRY TO LEARN FROM HIS STYLE,CAUSE IT TRULY WAS UNIQE AT LEAST TO ME.

I just moved to Florida from Maine about a week ago. I was really excited; I thought I might finally see Savatage in person. I was turned on to them by The Edge of Thorns album. Labyriths really blew me away. Chriss Olivia became a major influence in my guitar playing and song writting. I still remember standing in a store, reading about his tragic passing; I thought that Savatage was no more. When Handful of Rain came out; I was stoked to see that Alex Scolnick(Ex-Testament) had stepped in to help out. And everytime I listen to Alone You Breathe, I think Of Chriss.

When I got into Savatage it was because of my sister who loved the music. I was only a child and was in ove with thelook. Over time I began to realize that the music was even more awesome and no longer cared if they were handsome. Then on my way into work one day I hear of the tragedy of Criss' passing. I had to stop my car and sit for the shock and raw emotion. The radio then played when the crowds are gone. I bawled like a baby knowing that one of the most talented musicians of our time was now gone. I prayed for Dawn's recovery every night and thanked Him when my prayers and those of thousands of Sava fans were answered. I told my sister of his death when I regained myself and then we both collapsed. The music that we had cut our rock teeth on was slowly fading. We thought it had died. In reality Criss did not die for his influence is in the music we hear today. No one can replace him but the music plays on. Never wanted to go Always wanted to stay Cause the person I am Is the parts that I play.....

Well, I've read this board so many times not knowing what to say. What do you say when one with so much talent and love for life is taken from you so young? Criss will be missed by everyone who has been touched by his music. The radio and Mtv didn't really seem to care when he died. I didn't even find out about it until four months after it happened, but he is still alive in the hearts of his true fans

I have been fortunate to see the mighty SAVATAGE with Criss a few times. They always seemed to play CHICAGO a few times a year. The first time I saw the mighty SAVATAGE I was just blown away. From the sheer volume of the band to Jon's ear shattering shrieks I was in total heaven. To those who are into the new stuff, I have always loved the old stuff. The albums Siren's and The Dungeons are Calling are my treasured jewels. Just to hear Criss's riffs on Siren's and Dungeons gives you major chill's. The best SAVATAGE show I saw was when they did almost the whole STREETS cd when they were in Chicago. Blew me away when I had heard of Chriss's death. The thing that kept coming into my mind was, he didn't do anything to anybody, so why did he have to go? If anyone who reads this ever comes to CHICAGO, see if the band STONEHENGE is playing. They do a wicked version of SIRENS and they let me do the end of the song with the ahhh, ahhh, ahhh, ahhh, cause they have the same respect of the mighty SAVATAGE that I do. Haven't seen the SAv since Chriss has left. It won't compare.

I am the way
I am the light
I am the dark inside the night
I fear your hopes
I feelr your dreams
and in the dark
I hear your screams
don't turn away
just take my hand
and when you make the final stand
I'll be right there
I'll never leave
all i ask
of you
is believe....

I believe all things in life happen for a reason.I never liked goodbyes, so I wont say "goodbye", I will just say "see you later".Criss, all of us are searching for our freedom, our real freedom. Now you've found yours, make sure you enjoy it.I hope someday we meet, even If it is not down here on earth.

This may be unpopular, but it is true. The drunk driver that you condemn on these pages is also a human being like you and me. He never wanted or intended to end another man's life. He had no idea what the consequences of his actions might be. He is living a daily hell inside for what he's done. He is Human, as we all are. He made a mistake, as we all do. He is living with that mistake, as we all do with ours. Don't you have something in your past that you're not proud of?? LET THE PERSON WHO HAS NEVER HAD A FEW BEERS AND GOTTEN BEHIND THE WHEEL CAST THE FIRST STONE! It is a tragedy that Criss was taken away. But don't condemn the person that did it. Forgive him, as I'm sure Criss has. One day, he'll be standing there with the rest of us watching Criss perform his craft in heaven. Long live Savatage, and Criss Oliva in the "Hall of the Ultimate King"!

I'll tell ya what. Give me the rock.... I'll bean the guy in his head. To quote another rock band "who made him God to say I'll take your life from you."
Better yet.. why don't you say that to Dawn Oliva... Criss's wife. Or how about his big brother Jon. Maybe his mother or father. But then again... all he did was "get behind the wheel after a few beers." Ignorance is such bliss in todays world.
If you were to kill my family because you did something that moronic..... there wouldn't be a jail cell safe enough for you. But you wouldn't die.... I promise you that. But you definately would never be able to get behind the wheel of a car again. You would loose something that you cherrish highly, like the use of your legs.

I am wanting to show my respect for the entire Oliva family. I am just wanting to more than show. I would like to do which is more than I can right now.
There is a tribute CD being put together in honor of him. Now that is touching and I am proud to be a part of The Legion. I wish I could go ahead and do my part for this project but there is limited funds on my part. I just want to return to him what he and his older brother have given to me. I want to do more.......

Looking through this wall, its quite obvious that
the so few members of savatage have touched so many of
us all in someplace indescribavle. Criss could play, and he did, with all his heart and soul. Style and finesse,
and the grace to match. Only the good die young, and
sadly Criss has left us, but if all is well, hes playing
for the holy spirit up above as we speak.
its 4:20, Hail all Savafans, and may his spirit

The sheer innovative quality of the band and the sonic power and ability of Criss combined with a myriad of other reasons have made Savatage the most influential musical force in my life for the last ten years. I see no end to this trend. I feel honoured every time I play a record like 'Streets' or 'Dead Winter Dead' and I am sad that the first time I saw Criss playing in England was also the last. It was the Edge of Thorns tour with Overkill. Criss was amazing and I felt proud when the Overkill fans were asking me 'Who is this guy???'
The sheer emotional walls created by a Criss Oliva solo have always had their own feel, their own mood. His solos were amazing; Edge of Thorns, Summer's Rain, Hounds, D.T Jesus, Gutter Ballet to name but a few.
His music is a monument to the band's integrity and ability and these pages are a testament to his music.
May your memory continue and your songs be remembered with joy.
You have my deepest respect and admiration,
Si.

Dear Human being, I'm sorry if I seemed a bit harsh the other night
but when I saw that message I had at the time been listen ing to Jon
Oliva's rendition of Alone You Breathe on the Wake Of Magellan. The
combination of experiencing the feeling of hurt in Jon's voice and seeing the
sympathy towards the man responsible for Criss' death was way too much of a
mind boggling combination for me. Then I guess that the assumption of all
people drinking and driving at one time or another made me freak out. Your last
post makes a lot more sense to me then the past one. Truly Criss is now in a place
where he will be able to forgive and jam with the best of them. We all do miss him
though. I guess I also feel slightly guilty because I haven't even gotten to go to
Criss' gravesite and pay my last respects and that bothers me. Anyway, yeah forgiveness
is divine so I hope you can forgive me for asking about your identity. That was tactless.
I also hope you can understand my bitterness at the time of the post though. Savatage
IS forever.~PEACE TO ALL SAVAFANS!

I'm not the person who killed Criss Oliva. I just felt a little Human compassion for him and what he must be going through. Don't get me wrong, I'm a HUGE Savatage fan! I think it is tragic that Criss lost his life at such a young age. I think it is terrible that his children lost their father so early in life. I think it is awesome that Savatage has been able to continue on in honor of Criss Oliva. Criss was truly one of the greats! He is certainly up there with Rhoads, Van Halen, Malmsteen, Lynch etc! As I have said before though, I believe Criss has forgiven this person for his mistake, and so should we, as Human Beings. Forget? No, that is probably impossible. But to err is Human, to forgive devine!

As for your statement "Let he who has had a few beers and never gotten behind the wheel cast the first stone"

Chris Olivia, played with more feeling and talent than Eddie Van Halitosis and is one of the greatest guitar players to grace our planet regardless of his fame. Curt Cobain was an idiot not the genius that was Criss. I discovered Savatage's sound after he was gone and I will pay my respects at his gravesight, which is located in the next city adjacent to my own very soon. He is a legend in my eyes and a major influence and inspiration to my guitar playing. He is missed but not forgotten.

My first Savatage CD was Streets. I fell in love with it within moments of the first song. Everything in my eyes and ears was well composed. Since then, I have owned almost all of the Sava collection.
It wasn't until a few weeks after the accident that I had heard what happened. It was a sad day for me, for his family, for everyone. Though I didn't know him personally, Criss was a good man. He was full of life. From the pictures that I have seen, he was a happy, fun loving person. My heart and Sympathy goes to you all.

If that was truely you who submitted that entry, it was truely BEAUTIFUL. No one should have died on that fateful nightexcept perhaps the man responsible.. his death was a tragic waste... and I believe that, had you died instead of him, he would say the same thing, he'd have wished that he had died instead of you. Nothing that anyone here can say can take away the pain you must feel still, 6 years later. You are truely a brave woman. Continue to be strong and know that someday you may be reunited with the man your heart is aching for. Love and Peace go with you, Dawn, and to the rest of the Oliva family and close friends.

I'm a heavy metal guitarist who has done 2 records and 3 CDs with AXEMASTER, THE AWAKENING, & REIGN (that were worldwide releases). I regret that I never had the chance to meet Criss personally, but I met him through his music. His influence on me as a guitarist and songwriter is huge. I not only respect his abilty and unique style, but the feel he had in his playing had his signature on it (something lacking in too many guitarists). I will always be greatly saddened because in his death, we lost an artist who can never be replaced. This is a great loss for all who love this musical style. I consider myself lucky that I was able to see him play live, and we are all lucky that he left a great legacy. I just hope I will be able to leave a legacy anywhere close to half as impressive. -----Joe

Dear God, Why... Criss was one of the most talented musicians to come down the pike in years, but we only got to witness the magic for a little while. It's been years since he died, but the fact remains that through his playing, and the wonderful music of Savatage, he touched my life, and the lives of so many people. When I first heard the album Gutter Ballet, I had no idea that metal existed beyond the standard road dog/party image. Criss's incredible, soulful playing showed me something different. God Bless, Criss. Good night.

I have been a fan of Savatage since the release of Gutter Ballet in 1989. Inspired by the raw but melodic Guitar work of Criss Oliva, I have been influenced emotionally and can only hope that someday my playing will bring out these emotions in other Musicians and listeners.
I was fortunate to see Savatage live at "the Palace" in Hollywood, Ca (1991 I believe.....?) standing directly in front of Criss Oliva I was in Awe! as they started the show off with "of Rage and War" unfortunately the show was cut short due to electrical problems.
He may be gone, but he left us with his music which is alive and well in my house
My heart goes out to the Family and Friends of Criss Oliva.
Forever longing to hear him play again.
Sincerely,
Dave

As I sit here alone in the darkness, it is Criss that is on my mind.
I had the priveledge to see him perform live with Jon. It is my
dream to jam with my brother onstage with our own group.Perhaps
one day that will come.I have been in this "gutter ballet" so to
speak for a long time. And I dont know if I'll ever make it as a musician.
Yet the tears that I shed for you Criss leads me to think otherwise.
Jon, you are very fortunate that you had the chance to do with your
brother, only what I dream of accomplishing with mine. I have a vision
and only he holds the key for my hopes. In that, we are one. I looked in your eyes
Jon, and I saw my dream's reflection. I have the music all inside,
now all I need is the voice of my beloved brother. Come home soon brother,
for I will be waiting. Criss, is already home. Be strong Jon and Dawn, God
is with you and all who loved Criss and the music you two made for the world.
Always, Anthony Jon Sims

I GOT INTO LISTENING TO SAVATAGE ABOUT FOUR OR FIVE YEARS AGO. SAVATAGE IS THE MOST POWERFUL BAND I HAVE EVER HEARD. THE BEST AND OF COURSE MY FAVORITE. THAT GOES FOR SAME OF CRISS OLIVA. This Message is to the family of Criss Oliva.
Until this past year, I had not known who Cristopher Michael Oliva was, then someone played me a Savatage tape and I Immediately fell in love with his playing. He became one of, probably my main guitar idol. I've never met Criss, but I know in my heart that he was very much like the person that I am; intraverted, down to earth, and sometimes frusterated and angry. None of us are perfect; not even our Idols and not the Kennedy's. Which is another reason for me writing this message. I had thought of sharing my thougts many times on this web page, but for some reason refrained from doing so. I'm not a man of many words, never was even though I'm hardly 21yrs old. But that wasn't the reason. Just today with all the coverage on the Kennedy tragedy I started to get very effected by it all. When it first started on the news, I blew it off and acted like it didn't bother me but I now see that it does. I can only imagine what it would have been like If I had known Criss at the time of his death what I would have felt then. Only sadly not as many people as there should have been knew who Criss Oliva was. He was an enormous musician and his playing and him as an individual will always have a place in my heart. I hope that this message will get to you, the Oliva family, I know that your probably a very big family like the Kennedy's or the McGraw's. In my final words I'd like to say that I hope to one day become the great guitarist that Criss Oliva was. Not neccessarily play the same type of music because I can feel the pain and frustration that he felt as a human being but be as unique and artistic as he was. It would be my dream. I hope this message gets to the Oliva family. I know that your a very big family like the Kennedy's or the McGraw's and I hope that you will accept my regards and my sympathy.

CRISS HAS LEFT ME IN A SHADOW OF DREAMS..
WITH NO HELPING HANDS BESIDE ME AND NOTHING IS 4EVER ..REDEEMS..
DARKNESS STILL INSIDE MY BRAIN ,AND NOTHING REALLY SEEMS...
QUIET ENOUGH FOR ME TO LET ME BE
THE ONE WHO CRIED REGRETFULY.
TAKE ME AWAY AND SET ME FREE
I CAN'T FULLY STAND THIS AGONY.
GET ME OUTTA HELL EVEN ON MY KNEES,
AM I LOST IN DREAMS OR REVERIES?
TRUST HAS ALWAYS BEEN JUST GIVEN AWAY,
BUT NO ONE HAD TO LEARN SELF LOYALTY.
I'VE SPENT MY LIFE ENJOYING IN
THINKING OF DARK MEMORIES.
ALL WHAT I HAVE LEARNES WAS TORTURING,
SINCE I'VE BEEN IN PAIN AND SUFFERING.
GOD HELP ME PLEASE I'M NOT READY
THIS IS NOT A LIFE BUT A TRAGEDY.

SADNESS IS AROUND
YOUR HEART IS TRUELY WOUNDED.
MORE PROBLEMS ARE COMING TO COUNT
MORE BITTER THEY WILL SOUND.
AND EVEN IN THE CROWD
YOUR HEART WON'T BE FOUND...

Yes, its the same guy. I was stricken with an idea immediately after posting my previous comment and was too late to catch it before it sent. I was thinking about the last song that Criss left us with... Sleep. Its strangely like a premonition, you know, what with sleep being sometimes used as a euphemism for death. The song Sleep is special to me because it sounds very similar (musically) to a song written by a Brother Eagle Scout from my Troop who died a likewise tragic death (electrocution, as the story goes). The song he wrote is one of the most important things to people in our troop and as I listen to Sleep, it carries something of a double whammy of death because it reminds me of both criss' and clay's (he was the Eagle who died) deaths. But both songs are so beautiful, its something of a bittersweet listening experience. Anyway, just thought I'd share another story with you folks.

I posted a message on this wall once soon after I had found Savatage, and before I had had time to truly appeciate Criss (my first album was TWoM). But now, thugh this message is far overdue, I still choose not to mourn the loss of criss before I was even aware of his existance (I only discovered Savatage a year ago, and since then own all studio albums), but to still revel in his immortal sound. I'm thankful that criss' playing has been preserved for people like myself who missed him. I revel in the sounds so wholly, they are my drug. I was always afraid that I'd become an addict of something like many of my extended family and was careful around substances, but heavy metal caught me unawares. Truth be told, I really don't mind. When I listen to Believe, thats all I can bear to do. I must stop and do nothing but listen to the pure emption pouring from Criss' hands (and Jon's voice, naturally). I can instantly recognize criss' playing and have memorized almost all of his solos (I could point out the smallest of mistakes)--its a wonder I haven't worn out my cd's with all the play they got. I guess I should wrap this up, but I'll just be thankful and say that criss played a substantial role in making metal one of the two most important things in my life.

ITS BEEN A WHILE SINCE I'VE HAD THE HEART TO TALK ABOUT CRISS, I ADMIT THAT IT STILL PAINS ME TO LISTEN TO HIS GUITAR PLAYING . THE GUY WAS SUCH AN INFLUENCE,AND A COOL PERSON. I MET HIM ONCE AND HAD A LONG CONVERSATION WITH HIM,I ONLY SAW THE ORIGI0NAL LINE UP TWICE, THE TIME I MET HIM WAS ON GUTTER BALLET, HE EXPRESSED THAT IF THIS ALBUM DIDN'T TAKE THE BAND OVER THE TOP ,HE WOULD BE AMAZED. I TOLD HIM IT DIDN'T MATTER BECAUSE THE ALBUM WAS AMAZING,AND HE THOUGHT THAT WAS COOL, HE WAS SO FUCKING ORIGIONAL, I THOUGHT HIS PLAYING WAS SO UN- AMERICAN SOUNDING ,BUT HIS OWN. I ALSO GAVE HIM HIM SOME KILLER SMOKE(SORRY BUT IT WAS KILLER!!!) AND HE WAS SO POLITE AND DOWN TO EARTH, I JUST KNOW HE WILL LIVE ON IN EVERYONE'S MEMORY, PEACE!!!

hi chris. i've signed here many a time and sometimes, it's just necessary for me to do so again. being an atheist, i should know, that there is no way you can hear me. but everytime i start crying listening to 'believe', 'if i go away' or whatever song you've co-written and co-lived, i somehow know that you are watching us all and are grateful for all the support in all the years, for what you believed in and, ultimately lived. there are no feelings without excess in living and this is what you showed us. your death is the only death of a musician, and therefore of a guy i have never met in my life, that has ever affected me. your music will live forever through your loyal fans, who are grateful that you have given them a bit more sense in this crazy, fucked up world. thank you chris, i will never forget you, even if i should (however) get 100 years old. through half my life, savatage and you have contributed to my development as a decent human being, that i esteem myself to be, and i am forever grateful for that.

love, matt.

p.s. dawn, should you be reading this, i want you to know, that nobody ever can know what you have been through and what the loss is in your live, but i just want you to know that there are people out there thinking constantly about you and chris. i hope you have again found a certain meaning in life, although it will never be the same. respect for still living, matt.

You were the way, you were my light. You took the dark out of my life. You gave me hopes, and all my dreams, you were the best, forever you'll be. You touched our lives, you gave us bliss, and all your music we all will miss, but your always there, you'll never leave, and as the band plays on, you'll see.............we all believe. Thank you Criss for everything. There is nothing more you could do to touch your fans hearts the way that you already have. May your memory and legend live on and until you play with the band again, we will all still believe.

When there's nothing more about it
And the guitars are quiet
Outside in the streets without you
There's still a riot

Hey, Criss, you've gone to soon, we still need you here, don't you think there are enough good guitar players in heaven right now?
But it's good to know that you're waiting there.
To every Sava-Fan out there: BELIEVE

I just wanted to say that Criss Oliva is still alive in my heart. His music peirces my soul, and brings goose bumps to my skin even today. He was a wonderful musician, and he is now and always will be.
I would also like to express my deep love for Savatage. They send me soaring with every song. They are my favorite group. Everynight before I go to sleep, I put my CD's in my changer and play them all night while we sleep.

There are only few bands which were able to find an eternal place in my heart. Savatage is one of them. I'm very glad
that Jon Oliva & Co had not give up this band after Criss's
accident. His body died, but his soul lives on in his music,
in your music, which has become a part of my life. Stay heavy and forever RAISE THE FIST OF THE METALCHILD.
