Savatage / T.S.O

The TSO Tour wraps up tonight in New York City and Atlanta, GA.  I have added a few more reviews in the TSO tour section up through the December 22nd shows... More pictures will be added shortly.  We are missing reviews on a few shows, so if anyone went, and would like to contribute, please do.

For those German speaking fans (and those who are not) SPV has an interesting article about Savatage on their German website as well as the American one. The German one gives a sneak preview of the Poets and Madmen album art.

TSO was featured on VH-1's Rockshow last night.  Host Scotty Ian read two "fan-mail" letters as well.  One was written by none other than Katrina Chester (Luxx, TSO Vocalist).  For those interested, Savatage was mentioned by name in the segment.   A big thank you to Katrina for getting the word out.

Nuclear Blast America released Savatage "Live in Japan" on November 14.  The CD contains new Artwork.

Nuclear Blast America has also merged with Century Media.  This should not put the release date for "Poets and Madmen" in any kind of jeopardy.  The press release follows:

For immediate release:
November 15, 2000

Century Media Records and Nuclear Blast America
proudly present a strategic alliance as the world’s best
Heavy Metal labels combine under one roof.

Esteemed Heavy Metal stalwarts Century Media Records and Nuclear Blast Records have combined forces to make an indelible impact Stateside in 2001. The owners of the two German companies have been hammering out the details for some time to what one industry insider is already calling a “metal monopoly”.

Oliver Withoeft, CEO of Century Media Records reacts, “It’s not our intention to become a monopoly, but we are excited about the opportunity to be working together with one of the world’s premiere metal labels.”

Century Media US, who will be celebrating their tenth year anniversary in 2001, have made great strides in the past five years by developing the careers of notable artists such as Stuck Mojo, Iced Earth, Skinlab, Nevermore and Emperor, as well as establishing an increasingly strong presence for their mail-order and distribution which handles over 3,000 titles for other labels. Nuclear Blast America’s Philadelphia-based office was begun in 1997 and the label has since established names like In Flames, Hammerfall, Hypocrisy, Meshuggah and Dimmu Borgir, and look to further that acclaim by acquiring such top-selling traditional artists as Savatage and S.O.D. (both of who will have new records next year).

Nuclear Blast owner Markus Staiger comments, “Through this alliance between Century Media and Nuclear Blast a lot of things will change for the better, because both companies will be able to benefit out of the other company’s knowledge and both companies can combine their power to become even more successful.”

Nuclear Blast is in the process of relocating their operations to the west coast uniting both companies under one roof. Vice-President/General Manager Marco Barbieri will head Century Media and Nuclear Blast, yet each will maintain separate
A + R/Product Managers and promotion contacts to retain their own strong individualistic character, while co-operating behind the scenes in the administration, production, accounting and warehousing aspects thus giving each the best of both worlds.

Each label will continue to be distributed exclusively in the US by Caroline Distribution. Rick Williams, General Manager of Caroline, had this to say when hearing the news, “Caroline is excited about the opportunities presented from the unification of two of their most successful metal labels. Our relationship with Century Media has been built on a framework of mutual admiration and this venture will only serve to enhance that relationship and will propel both labels into the forefront of the metal market in the US.”

New contact information and staff additions will follow; in the meantime any questions can be addressed to Marco Barbieri at (310) 574-7400 or email
marco@centurymedia.com or nuclearblast@centurymedia.com.

The Poets and Madmen listening session was held yesterday in New York City. Jon Oliva, Christopher Caffery, Johnny Lee Middleton and Paul O'Neill were all in attendance to share seven new Savatage songs with the media. Tracks included were Commisar, (I Seek) Power, Drive, Cantations, Surrender, Man In The Mirror and Got to Get Back to a Reason. Two different sessions were held, one for European guests and one for Americans. In between the two sessions, the band held a press conference which lasted about 30 minutes. Many things were discussed during the time, most of which has already been covered on this site. A few interesting topics discussed were Al Pitrelli and the idea of Poets and Madmen being a concept album.

Al Pitrelli does appear on the upcoming disc. A couple of his solos were used, which were recorded before he parted ways and joined Megadeth.

Poets and Madmen will once again be tied together by a story, although it was initially not a concept album. Paul O'Neill didn't give away to much as far as the idea of the concept, but several hints were thrown out.
The CD is still not completed but should be within the next few weeks. Final stages of mixing are going on right now. The album will meet it's February release date.

No official news about who will replace Al Pitrelli or Zachary Stevens on the road, but there will be replacements made by tour time in February. The band has been looking in several directions, but can't make comments now because of legal reasons.

I will have a more detailed report up about this weekends happenings later on. . . I just need to listen to the press conference again.

TSO rehearsals officially began today. Line ups for the East/West dates are still not known, but expect to see members of Savatage in both bands.

If anyone has pictures they would be willing to contribute to the site from yesterdays press session, it would be a big help.

And on a personal note. . . The message board has been closed for the last few days and will remain that way until further notice. Please don't E-mail us and beg us to reopen it. It was closed because of the lack of civil discussion going on in the Zak debate. There is no need to use profanity towards each other, and you should all think before you post things. We are not in the censoring business, and the reasons for posts being pulled have nothing to do with the pro-Zak or pro-Jon argument. It has to do with the hateful/hurtful things that were being said towards band members, administrators of this site, and other fans. It is all unnecessary. Why it turned into an argument to begin with is beyond me. Zak left the band. It is not his fault, it is not the bands fault, that things could not work out. Why not be thankful for the 8 year run he had with the band, instead of making everything so negative.

Zachary Stevens has officially left the band to pursue other career options.  The official press release can be found here.

A message from Paul O'Neill:

Hello TSO Fans:

This year, in an effort to allow as many people as possible to experience the Trans-Siberian Orchestra's"Christmas Eve & Other Stories" tour during the holiday season, we will be mounting two touring companies simultaneously. We are able to do this because of the large number of artists involved in creating Trans-Siberian Orchestra albums. Musicians and singers from our albums will be featured on both tours. Also, as we did last year, we will be introducing new artists, many of whom will be performing on our next TSO release.

Paul O'Neill

TSO tour rehearsals start on Monday.  Right now there is no word on what the line ups will be on the East and West Coast shows.  When a decision is made, it will be posted right here.

Media day in Savatage land.  Taking time out of his busy schedule, Mr. Oliva has spent the entire day doing interviews to update everyone on what has been going on with both Savatage and TSO.

August USA tour plans have now been pushed back till October.  Plans are to do these shows with a new guitarist.  No word on a replacement for Al Pitrelli yet, that decision will come following the recording of the new album.  TSO will then be doing shows from mid-November till right around Christmas.  A full scale World Tour for Savatage should kick off in late January 2001.

Official word on Al Pitrelli regarding TSO is that if his schedule permits, he will join TSO on the road.

A Poets and Madmen sampler CD should be released in October.  Plans are to have 2 or 3 new songs on it.  There is also a possibility of Japan Live '94 being released on DVD later on in the year.  Rumors are that it will include a bonus acoustic track on it.

Yes!  We Have an update.  First off, this site will be going through a major facelift in the months to come.  You might see several changes along the line before you see the finished product, like this one.  The What's New and News & Info page have been combined and can be accessed through either link on the main page.  This will keep things much easier to update around here.

As for Savatage news (for those of you who don't keep up with the Message Board), the band is currently in a New York City studio working on their upcoming release Poets and Madmen.  Periodic updates have been placed on the message board from Christopher Caffery and Jeff Plate.  Initial drum tracks have been finished and keyboard and Guitar track recording will start this week.   There is not to much to report as far as the content, although several teases have been let out including three song titles, (There In The) Silence, Cantations and Man In The Mirror.  A September release date seems probable at the current time.

For those of you still e-mailing questions about Al Pitrelli, he has officially left Savatage to join Megadeth.  A Press release from the band can be found here.  We wish the best of luck to Al and the rest of the members of Megadeth.
