Please give me some definition as to what "symphonic" means in this context.
Are we talking about groups that use an orchestra as part of their music (such as Rick Wakeman)?
Or, is this kin to "melodic" rock?

Rhapsody is the best Symphonic Metal band IMO.

Among those that use orchestra, Lacrimosa or Therion. Among those that do not use orchestra but have a symphonic style, Symphony X and Tristania.

Are we going to lump ALL symphonic bands together, or break them down individually? For instance, I consider, as they do, Rhapsody to be Hollywood Epic Symphonic Metal...Symphony X to be Power Progressive Metal, and bands like Nightwish, Stratovarius, Edguy, and Sonata Arctica (my pick for best symphonic metal band) to be symphonic...

Therion, Kamelot, Rhapsody, even Savatage......none of these bands are using orchestral elements in a way that displays knowledge of what an orchestra can do. it's almost always block chords in parallel motion.

Symphony X don't use a real orchestra, but they know how to do legitimate orchestral composition.

Pain of Salvation's "Epilogue" is 3 minutes of very simple synth strings, but they are the most realistic synth strings i've heard and the composition is skilled.

Yes were pretty cool with an orchestra on tour, too.
